DEMOCRATS OPEN CAMPAIGN OFFICE IN EAST COUNTY

By Miriam Raftery

August 30, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – Congresswoman Susan Davis and Congressman/Mayoral candidate Bob Filner were among the many candidates on hand last weekend for the grand opening of a Democratic Party campaign headquarters at 7839 University Ave., Suite 106, La Mesa.

County Democratic Party Chairman Jess Durfee spoke of “fulfilling a promise” to help Democrats in East County.  While much of East County remains solidly “red”, redistricting has shifted many communities in East County into Democratic districts and voter registration is increasingly favoring Democrats in some areas that have long been considered Republican strongholds.

LEGISLATURE PASSES BILL TO HAVE RETIRED JUDGES REDRAW DISTRICT LINES FOR SAN DIEGO SUPERVISORS

By Miriam Raftery

August 28, 2012 (San Diego)—San Diego County Supervisors won’t be able to redraw their own district lines or assign hand-picked appointees to do so if Governor Jerry Brown signs Senate Bill 1331 and San Diego voters approve the new plan.

The bill, authored by Senator Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego), has passed both houses of the state Legislature.  It would require retired judges to redraw supervisors’ districts starting in 2021. The bill applies only to San Diego County, where Supervisors have been accused of gerrymandering districts to retain power for conservatives.

BILL TO GUT CEQA, CALIFORNIA’S TOP ENVIRONMENTAL LAW, ON HOLD

Governor , who wants to “crush” opponents of big energy projects, called CEQA reform  “Lord’s work”

“Governor Brown is dangerous to the financial and environmental health of California, and I am extremely disappointed in his short-sightedness.”--Laura Cyphert, Cedar Fire Survivor and cofounder of the East County Community Action Coalition

By Miriam Raftery

August 23, 2012 (Sacramento)—In a stealth effort that shocked enviornmentalists, business groups succeeded in gutting a bill in the State Assembly and inserted language to essentially repeal the California Enviornmental Quality Act (CEQA) .  The measure passed the Assembly yesterday and advanced to the State Senate. But today, State Senate President Darrell Steinberg and the bill’s author, Michael Rubio, held a press conference to announce that the measure will not be taken up before the end of the legislative session next week.

Sierra Club California director Kathryn Phillips voiced relief, calling SB 317 “one of the worst attacks on environmental protections that we’ve seen in the 40-year life of the law.”

SUPERVISORS SUED BY SAN DIEGANS FOR OPEN GOVERNMENT

By Miriam Raftery

August 22, 2012 (San Diego)—Some people just don’t learn.  Back in January, San Diego Supervisors  got sued for hiding information from the public about a developer-backed scheme to eliminate community planning groups. The Board backed down to avoid a trial, vacated votes and held a hearing with proper public notice and open—though heated--public testimony.

Now history has repeated itself. San Diegans for Open Government has filed a lawsuit alleging that Supervisors once more violated the Ralph M. Brown Act. According to the suit, this time the County failed to post an agenda for Supevisors' June 26, 2012 agenda on  the County website for the 72-hours required by state law. Supevisors further failed to postpone the meeting, took action on agenda items and refused to allow members of the public to address Supervisors on a key agenda item.

By Nadin Abbott

August 22, 2012 (Washington D.C.) – A U.S. Senate candidate’s false belief that  pregnancies from rape are rare has sparked national outrage.  The incident also reveals fissures in the Republican party-drawing attention to the party’s new plank calling for all abortions to be outlawed—and revealing just how unpopular the  party’s extremist platform is with women.

POLITICAL REFLECTIONS: PAUL RYAN—MITT DOUBLES DOWN ON THE RIGHT

By Mark Gabrish Conlan

August 14, 2012 (San Diego) --
Up until presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Mitt Romney named Wisconsin Congressmember Paul Ryan as his running mate on August 10, the safe bet seemed to be that Romney was going to base his general-election strategy on “a referendum, not a choice.” For one thing, that’s Politics 101: as pioneering American political scientist V. O. Key said in the 1960’s, Americans vote on issues but “retrospectively and negatively.”

BLOCK AUTHORS RESOLUTION TO PROTECT SAN DIEGO JOBS AND OPPOSE AUTOMATIC MILITARY CUTS TO REGION; REDUCTIONS A ‘BODY BLOW’ TO ECONOMY

August 14, 2012 (Sacramento) —Assemblymember Marty Block (AD-78) today introduced Assembly Joint Resolution 46 urging the President and Congress to adopt an alternative spending plan to sequestration – automatic federal budget cuts of $1.2 trillion over 10 years scheduled to begin January 2013 because Congress has not achieved its budget targets.

“This measure is a plea to Congress for reason before it places the federal budget on automatic pilot, causing additional economic uncertainty and job loss in the San Diego region and across the nation,” Block said. “Congress would strike another body blow to our economic recovery if it allows sequestration to occur.”
