GOVERNOR CRAFTS DEAL WITH UNIONS FOR $15 MINIMUM WAGE—WITHOUT A BALLOT MEASURE

 

Update March 31:  Both houses osf the Legislature have passed this measure, which is now on the Governor's desk for signature and is expected to be signed into law.

March 29, 2016 (Sacramento) -- A deal hammered out by labor leaders and Governor Jerry Brown would raise California’s minimum wage to $15 an hour without the need for a ballot initiative, if it is approved by the Legislature.

Under the agreement, most businesses would phase in the increase in wages gradually over several years, starting at $10.50 in January 2017, $11 in January 2018, then rising $1 a year until January 2022, when it would reach $15 an hour.  Businesses with less than 25 workers would have an extra year to meet the new wage requirements. March 28, 2016 (Sacramento) - The petition signatures of more than 15,000 voters have been delivered to California Secretary of State Alex Padilla in support of resolution ACR 145 asking his office to provide an additional, nonpartisan “public ballot” so that all voters ­ regardless of their political affiliation or non­affiliation ­ can cast a vote for the candidate of their choice in the June presidential primary election.

March 27, 2016 (La Mesa) – Turnout was light at the first of five county hearings March 17th on a controversial redistricting plan proposed by the Grossmont Union High School District.  Members of the San Diego County Office of Education ‘s Committee on School Reorganization emphasized that they hope to see more public turnout and hear from a broad cross-section of the community at the upcoming four hearings.

POPE’S EASTER MESSAGE CALLS FOR COMPASSION FOR REFUGEES

March 27, 2016 (San Diego) – On Good Friday, Pope Francis washed the feet of European immigrants including Christians, Muslims and Hindus, demonstrating his outreach to people of all faiths and calling for world peace. 

In his Easter Sunday mass at the Vatican, the pontiff stated, ““This day invites us not to forget those men and women seeking a better future, an ever more numerous throng of migrants and refugees, including many children, fleeing war, hunger, poverty and social injustice.”

He also criticized those who seek to stop migrants fleeing persecution in the Middle East and North African from seeking a safe haven in Europe and other regions.

BURNED CHURCH IN SPRING VALLEY FINDS NEW TEMPORARY HOME FOR SERVICES

March 27, 2016 (Spring Valley) – A fire burned down the Full Gospel Church of God in Christ in Spring Valley last weekend.  The Pentacostal church serves a congregation of about 30 people, mainly African Americans.

Just in time for Easter Sunday services, another church previously burned in a fire has offered up space for Full Gospel’s worship services, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

A SANDERS TRIFECTA: HUGE WINS IN ALASKA, WASHINGTON AND HAWAII

March 26, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) -- Three states held Democratic presidential caucuses today—and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders soundly defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton by hefty margins in all three western states.  (There were no Republican matches today.)

In Alaska, Sanders won a whopping 81.6% of the vote, while Clinton took just 18.4% with 100% of precincts reported. Washington state was won by Sanders with 72.7% of the vote to Clinton’s 27.2% with 99% of precincts reporting.In Hawaii, Sanders won with 70% of the delegates to Clinton's 30%.

In the meeting, Kelly complained of “patent misinformation” and then proceeded to make bald-faced lies slandering East County Magazine and the integrity of our editor, Miriam Raftery.

March 25, 2016 (El Cajon) - Borrego Health announced the completion of the build-out of its flagship East County location in El Cajon, commonly known as Centro Medico El Cajon.   The completed project will increase capacity by up to 40%.  The El Cajon location currently sees 250 to 275 patients per day.
