February 5, 2012 (Lakeside)-- Reducing crime, making neighborhoods safer, and in general improving the quality of life for all of our citizens can only be accomplished through partnerships and team efforts, the San Diego Sheriff’s office says. The Santee Sheriff’s Station is holding a Community Awareness Day on Saturday, February 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lindo Lake Park, 12660 Lindo Lane, Lakeside.

7-11 ROBBED IN LA MESA

 
February 5, 2012 (La Mesa)--A suspect who claimed to be armed robbed the 7-11 at 4253 Palm Avenue early this morning. 
An employee reported that the suspect entered the store around 2:51 a.m., approached the counter, and simulated holding a gun beneath a towel.

POLICE ARREST TEEN, 16, FOR POINTING LASER AT HELICOPTER


February 4, 2012 (San Diego) - San Diego Police Department patrol officers from Southeastern Division have arrested a 16-year-old boy for pointing a laser at the police helicopter, ABLE. Such actions can put a pilot’s light in danger, since night vision goggles amplify light 30,000 times and the flash can be blinding.

SUSPECT PLEADS GUILTY IN BARONA CASINO CARJACKING CASE

February 1, 2012 (Lakeside)—Kirell Rybarev, an East County resident, pled guilty today to felony carjacking and felony battery on a peace officer. A judge at the El Cajon Courthouse sentenced him to five years and eight months in state prison for stealing a car from the Barona Casino in Lakeside after punching a valet attendant.

OUSTED CUSTOMER FIRES SHOTS AT LEMON GROVE BAR


January 28, 2012 (Lemon Grove) – A man who was asked to leave Dirk’s Nightclub in Lemon Grove shortly before closing time at 2 a.m. returned with a semi-automatic rifle and opened fire, ECM news partner 10 News reports. The shooter and a friend are believed to have fled in a dark pick-up truck.

January 28, 2012 (San Diego)--A federal grand jury in San Diego has handed up 17 indictments and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California has filed eight criminal complaints charging a total of 119 defendants with federal racketeering conspiracy, drug trafficking violations, and federal firearm offenses, announced U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of California Laura E. Duffy. 
 
Another 14 suspects remain at large. The FBI has released photos, which can be viewed here

ATKINS BILL WILL DENY VIOLENT ABUSERS SPOUSAL SUPPORT FROM THEIR VICTIMS

 (Sacramento)  Assemblymember Toni Atkins (D-San Diego) has introduced legislation to prevent abusive ex-spouses from forcing their victims to pay them spousal support and other financial compensation following a divorce.  AB 1522 was inspired by the case of a San Diego area woman who was ordered by a court to pay her husband's legal fees plus monthly spousal support, despite the fact that he was convicted of committing violent sex crimes against her and was ultimately sent to prison.

January 20, 2012 (Santee)—A Sheriff’s Deputy from the Santee Station tried to pull over a driver in a white Honda for a false registration in the 10000 block of Mission Gorge Road shortly before 3 p.m. today. 

“The driver initially yielded, but as the deputy was getting out of his patrol car, the driver started backing up, ramming the patrol car,” said Melissa Aquino, public affairs officer with the Sheriff.

WOMAN’S HUSBAND AND MOTHER-IN-LAW ARRESTED IN EL CAJON MURDER-FOR-HIRE PLOT


January 20, 2012 (El Cajon ) – El Cajon Police have arrested June Carol Pickard, 57, and her son, Francis Richard Noble, 31. The two were arraigned Tuesday, accused of conspiring to hire a hitman to kill Noble’s wife.

Police learned of the plot after a former classmate of Noble came forward and revealed that Pickard had offered money for killing the 31-year-old victim.

BOY, 10, SUSPECTED IN FATAL STABBING OF 12-YEAR-OLD FRIEND

January 16, 2012 (El Cajon)—A 12-year-old boy has died of stab wounds in a crime that has shocked a neighbors on Royal Road in the unincorporated area of El Cajon.  The  suspect is a 10-year-old boy, Lt. Larry Nesbitt with the Sheriff's Homicide Detail confirms.

A neighbor, Derek Gorton, 18, told 10 News that the boys were close friends, but indicated that the younger child suffered from severe emotional issues. “Even though he threw temper tantrums, we never thought he’d do anything like this,” he said.

January 16, 2012 (La Mesa) – A 67-year-old man who drove to a dumpster behind his residential complex at 4842 Parks Avenue in La Mesa to discard trash was robbed shortly after 11 a.m. The thief stole the victim’s red 2005 Hyundai Elantra 4-door car and wallet at gunpoint, then fled northbound on Williamsburg toward El Cajon Blvd.

January 14, 2012 (Alpine) – The Alpine Community Network reports that a reader has alerted the publication to a possible attempt to read ATM users' personal identification number (PIN) codes with binoculars outside a local market.

 

The suspicious individual was reported in Alpine and drove a red Cadillac, however if the activity was a scam operation it could possibly target people in other communities.

PHONE SCAM TARGETS REFUGEES


January 12, 2012 (San Diego) – The  Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) has been alerted to a new telephone scam that thus far is targeting Bhutanese refugees.  A man identifying himself as a representative of the “Federal Grants Department” calls from a Washington, DC-based telephone number, (202) 436-9601, informing recently resettled refugees that they are eligible to receive $10,000 because they are refugees from Bhutan. To claim the money, they are instructed to produce a money order for $650, and call the telephone number for further instructions on where to send the money. Be advised that this is NOT a legitimate solicitation.
