JONES BILL WOULD GIVE CONSUMERS ACCESS TO PUBLIC NOTICES ONLINE

By Miriam Raftery

March 8, 2012 (Sacramento) –An antiquated California law written before the Internet was invented restricts the running of public notices to only print newspapers.  Today, with the majority of Americans seeking out news online, Assemblyman Brian Jones (R-Santee) has introduced legislation to update the law and allow online media outlets to publish public notices such as new business announcements.

“AB 1902 will provide residents greater access to legal notices, and will more appropriately fulfill the intent of the law to insure the public is adequately made aware of public notices,” a fact sheet on the bill provided by Jones’ office states.   “Permitting online publications to sell and post public notices is a reasonable response to changing technology."

INGENUITY OF SAN DIEGANS CAN EASE GAS CRISIS, DR. SHIRLEY WEBER SAYS

Assembly Candidate says accelerating production of San Diego-made biofuels will ease pain at the pump and put hundreds back to work

March 2, 2012 (San Diego) – As oil prices hit a nine-month high this week, Dr. Shirley Weber, candidate for Assembly in San Diego’s southeastern 79th district, said that the ingenuity of San Diegans could have a hand in resolving the crisis.

“San Diego is home to groundbreaking research on biofuels, especially those developed from algae,” Dr. Weber said. “We need to accelerate the production being done here so that next time oil prices spike or a foreign regime tries to hold our economy hostage, we are in control of our own energy future. Accelerated biofuel production would not only ease pain at the pump, it would put hundreds of San Diegans back to work in good paying jobs in a growing sector.”

THE WOMAN WHO STOOD ALONE AGAINST THE “THIEVING BANKS”

How Kamala Harris played hardball and won $18 billion to help California homeowners

Story by Miriam Raftery, photos by Ron Logan

February 13, 2012 (San Diego) – Last September, the U.S. Department of Justice and attorney generals from other states were ready to sign a multi-state settlement of misconduct by banks that resulted in foreclosures.  The deal on the table? An estimated $4 billion or less for California, the state hardest hit by the foreclosure crisis. Moreover, no wrongdoers would be prosecuted.

So California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris stood up—and walked out.

Her actions led to a dramatically different settlement reached last week that is expected to ultimately reach $40 billion—including an estimated $18 billion for California and $1.5 billion for San Diego homeowners.
