Update November 13, 2016: Jarred Jefferson, 22, has been charged with felony vandalism for destroying or damaging 13 flags, as well as two counts of obstructing an officer, NBC 7 News reports. Poles were broken and some flags thrown in the street, where vehicles ran over them. The flags had been put up by a local Boy Scout troop.
November 12, 2016 (El Cajon) — El Cajon Police arrested a young man yesterday morning who was reported to be damaging American flags displayed along Main Street in downtown El Cajon in recognition of Veteran’s Day.
Witnesses called El Cajon Police to report a man vandalizing American flags and it didn’t take very long for a Police officer to arrive, track down the perpetrator and make contact. The suspect did resist initial attempts by the first officer on scene attempting to arrest him, but was eventually taken into custody after another officer responded and aided in controlling the uncooperative man.
November 12, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) – In July, San Miguel’s Fire Board voted by a slim one-vote margin to cancel its contract with CAL FIRE a year early and go back to being a free-standing district, but kept the action on hold pending outcome of the election.

November 11, 2016 (Riverside) - San Diego State women’s basketball got scores from three of its four freshmen but fell in its season opener, 72-44, to UC Riverside on Friday night at SRC Arena.
Making their collegiate debut, the Aztecs got production from Baylee Vanderdoes (7), Abby Lowe (2) and Monique Terry (2). McKynzie Fort paced her team with 14 points, while Ariell Bostick’s eight rebounds were a team-high.
November 11, 2016 (San Diego’s East County) -- Save water this winter by installing a rain barrel – and save money by taking advantage of discounts and rebates that reduce the final cost of each rain barrel to $15 before tax.
The San Diego County Water Authority and its 24 member agencies have partnered with the Solana Center for Environmental Innovation to offer 50-gallon rain barrels for $90 each. The rain barrels can be purchased through the Solana Center and are normally $149.
November 11, 2016 (San Diego) — Kamala Harris will be California’s first African-American U.S. Senator and the first Indian-American in the U.S. Senate. Harris, 52, a Democrat currently serving as California’s Attorney General, won over 62% of the votes, AP reported, winning a landslide victory over Loretta Sanchez, a Democrat who represents California in the 46th Congressional district.

November 11, 2016 (San Diego) – Maria, a maid and legal U.S. resident who has raised her daughter here, tearfully put her elderly, frail mother on a plane Wednesday night and said goodbye, perhaps forever. “She is going back to Mexico, before Donald Trump can deport her,” Maria told East Magazine.
President-Elect Trump has vowed to deport all 11 million undocumented immigrants in America—including those brought here as children and the parents of U.S. citizens. Even children who were brought here as babies, who have never known any other home. Even ill and elderly parents such as Maria’s mother, who has survived cancer and suffers from diabetes. Maria fears she is too ill to survive long on her own in Mexico—but the prospect of her mother languishing in a detention camp was even more frightening.
November 11, 2016 (Washington D.C.)—President-Elect Donald Trump has wasted no time in appointing environmental and health experts’ worst nightmares to key cabinet posts, though oil energy executives are praising the moves.
Energy lobbyist Mike McKenna has been named to head Trump’s Department of Energy transition team; his recent clients include Dow Chemical and the oil tycoon Koch brothers, Climate Wire and Scientific American report. Trump has also named infamous climate change denier Myron Ebell to lead the Environmental Protection Agency transition team. Ebell has said climate change is “nothing to worry about” in an interview with Vanity Fair.

November 10, 2016 (San Diego) - In honor of Veterans Day, County Animal Services is joining Animals for Armed Forces and waiving adoption fees to military members and their families on Saturday, Nov. 12 and Sunday, Nov. 13.
Residents who show a military ID can stop by the County’s three animal care facilities this Saturday and Sunday and choose from the many dogs, cats, rabbits up for adoption. The three locations will be open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. both days.

November 10, 2016 (Los Angeles) - The No. 16/15 San Diego State men's soccer team closed out its regular-season schedule on Thursday, battling No. rv/25 UCLA to a 0-0 draw in a key Pac-12 showdown at Drake Stadium.
With the result, the Aztecs (9-4-5, 4-3-3 Pac-12) clinch third place in the conference standings, matching their highest finish in league play since 2011, while the Bruins (9-7-2, 4-5-1 Pac-12) ended the year in fourth.

November 10, 2016 (San Diego)—Campus police are investigating a hate crime, robbery and vehicle theft that occurred at San Diego State University yesterday at2:28 p.m.
According to Lt. Ron Broussard, a student was walking to her vehicle in the stairwell at parking lot #12 when “two males, who made comments about President-elect Trump and the Muslim community, confronted her and grabbed her purse and backpack.” They also stole her car keys and her vehicle.

November 10, 2016 (San Diego) - San Diego State baseball Head Coach Mark Martinez has announced the signing of 12 athletes for the 2018 season. The group of 12 incoming players, all of who will be freshman when they arrive on campus, includes consists nine pitchers, two infielders and an outfielder. Four of the signees double as position players in addition to pitching.
The group includes athletes from local highs schools including one each from Eastlake HS, Scripps Ranch HS, Santana HS, Valhalla HS and Montgomery HS. Six of the signees ranks among the top 20 in the state of California at their position with one ranking among the top 70 players in the country.
November 10, 2016 (Chula Vista) - The Chula Vista Police Department (CVPD) Crimes of Violence Unit (COV), in close cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is revisiting the open 2002 cold case homicide of 14-year-old Gabriela “Gaby” Gonzales. Gaby disappeared on April 5, 2002 and has not been seen since. Gaby would be 29 years old today. View flyer.
November 9, 2016 (New York) -- America just became much more interesting to watch with the election of reality TV mogul Donald Trump as the 45th president. Trump has exceeded 270 delegates in the electoral college despite trailing Hillary Clinton by just over 200,000 votes nationally in the popular vote.
Update November 10, 2016: This evening George Gastil has retaken the lead by a slim 19-vote margin as counting of mail-in and provisional ballots continues.
November 9, 2016 (Lemon Grove) — The race to fill Lemon Grove’s mayoral seat vacated by retiring Mayor Mary Sessom is still too close to call. Councilman George Gastil jumped into an early lead, but today Councilmember Racquel Vasquez has pulled into the lead by a mere 12 votes. If elected, she would be the first African-American mayor in San Diego County.
