EL CAJON BEDROOM FIRE SENDS TWO PEOPLE TO UCSD BURN UNIT

 

September 7, 2014 (El Cajon)—Two people have been transported to the burn unit at the University of California San Diego Medical Center due to smoke inhalation and minor burns suffered in a bedroom fire early this morning.

BYSTANDERS HELP CHILDREN LEFT ALONE IN HOT CAR

 

July 12, 2014 (La Mesa)—A 9-month-old baby and a 4-year old child were left unattended inside a locked car at Grossmont Center on Friday afternoon amid sweltering heat.  Bystanders called 911 and were able to get the 4-year-old to unlock the door by the time Heartland Fire & Rescue crew arrived. The mother said she had been gone only five minutes; paramedics evaluated the children and released them  to their father.

July 8, 2014 (El Cajon)-Heartland Fire & Rescue crews in El Cajon responded to reports of a structure fire in the 1500 block of East Main Street in El Cajon this morning. As firefighters arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from one of the storage units at “Extra Space Storage,” located at 1539 East Main Street.

ROUGH LANDING FOR SMALL PLANE AT GILLESPIE FIELD AIRPORT

 

May 2, 2014 (San Diego's East County) - Shortly before 7:30 p.m., Heartland Fire & Rescue crews from El Cajon responded to reports of a plane crash at Gillespie Field Airport.  As firefighters arrived on scene they found that a single engine Cessna had landed without its’ landing gear, sliding to a stop on the runway.

KITCHEN FIRE DAMAGES APARTMENT UNIT IN EL CAJON

March 4, 2014 (El Cajon)--At approximately 2:15 p.m. Monday afternoon, Heartland Fire & Rescue crews from El Cajon and La Mesa responded to reports of a structure fire in the one-thousand block of Leslie Road in El Cajon.  As fire crews arrived on scene they found heavy smoke coming from a lower unit of the apartment structure at 1016 Leslie Road. Firefighters were able to stop the fire in approximately twenty minutes.

August 18, 2013 (El Cajon) – At 11:51 p.m. Saturday night, Heartland Fire & Rescue crews in El Cajon, with assistance from Cal Fire, responded to reports of a fire in the 3-hundred block of Wisconsin Avenue. As fire crews arrived on scene, smoke was seen coming from apartment #3, at 314 Wisconsin Avenue.

EARLY MORNING FIRE DESTROYS TATTOO BUSINESS ON BROADWAY

 

July 29, 2013 (El Cajon) – At 12:43 a.m. on July 25, Heartland Fire & Rescue crews in the City of El Cajon responded to reports of a structure fire in the 1-thousand block of Broadway in El Cajon.  Upon arrival firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the Classic Tattoo business located at 1024 Broadway.  Quick action by fire crews had the fire knocked down in less than 25 minutes.  Two adjoining businesses of the one story structure sustained smoke and water damage.  Heartland crews were assisted by fire units from Cal Fire and Santee fire departments.

December 1, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)--Heartland Fire & Rescue and Rady Children’s Hospital offer the following advice to keep you and your family safe this holiday season.

Burns: The typical burn injury seen during the holidays is a scald.  When adults enjoy hot liquids during colder weather, a small child may reach up for your cup and spill hot liquid, such as hot chocolate, coffee or soup. Spilling this scalding hot liquid onto their face, neck, hands and arms. Scald burns are the second leading cause of all burns according to the National Fire Protection Association(NFPA).

EL CAJON SAFETY & CAREER EXPO IS OCTOBER 13

October 6, 2012 (El Cajon) – The El Cajon Safety and Career Expo will take place October 13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fire Station 6, 100 East Lexington Ave., El Cajon.  This year’s event will honor the city’s centennial.  Heartland Fire and Rescue Fire Chief Rick Sitta will host the noon welcome ceremony that includes a tribute to responders and a tribute to the City of El Cajon’s Centennial.

A NEW FIRE CHIEF HAS BEEN SELECTED FOR HEARTLAND FIRE & RESCUE IN THE EAST

August 9, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – The Cities of El Cajon, La Mesa and Lemon Grove, whose jointly managed fire departments make up Heartland Fire & Rescue, have selected Rick Sitta as its new Fire Chief. Sitta replaces Chief Mike Scott, who retired on July 27, 2012.

FLETCHER HILLS LIBRARY’S ANNUAL ICE CREAM SOCIAL IS JULY 25

RESIDENTIAL STRUCTURE FIRE DISPLACES 3 ADULTS AND 10 CHILDREN

March 27, 2012 (Lemon Grove) -- At 9:11 a.m., Tuesday morning, Heartland Fire & Rescue crews from Lemon Grove, La Mesa, and El Cajon were dispatched to reports of a residential structure fire in the 1500 block of Skyline Drive.  A 911 call reported  a room on fire.  Fire crews arrived within 6 minutes to discover dark smoke coming from the front door and side bedroom window of a single story, single family residence.

February 2, 2012 (El Cajon)—The driver of a KSON radio station vehicle smelled smoke while sitting in traffic yesterday in downtown El Cajon. Looking behind his seat, he saw flames, quickly exited the vehicle and called 911 shortly before 2 p.m. yesterday.

FIREFIGHTERS REVIVE DOG “NEAR DEATH” AFTER FIRE IN EL CAJON

January 4, 2012 (El Cajon) – A homeowner escaped her burning mobile home this morning, but her chihuahua dog, Mojo, was found unconscious and near death. Thanks to dedicated efforts  by local firefighters, however, Mojo's live has been saved.

September 29, 2011 (El Cajon)—An ambulance burst into flames after oxygen tanks on board exploded late this afternoon at Westfield Parkway Plaza mall in El Cajon, according to Monica Zech, spokesperson for the city of El Cajon.

July 17, 2011 (La Mesa) – A fire has displaced seven residents at a triplex located at 5055 Thorne Drive in La Mesa. Heartland Fire & Rescue in La Mesa responded to a call at 3 p.m. and found smoke pouring from one of the units.

INVESTIGATORS SEARCH FOR CAUSE OF FIRE THAT DESTROYED HOUSE AND APTS IN LA MESA

July 9, 2011 (La Mesa) – Fire investigators remain on the scene this morning of a fire that started in an apartment building late yesterday and spread to a nearby home t 4759 70th Street.
 

“The home and rear apartments are considered a total loss,” said Monica Zech, public information officer for Heartland Fire & Rescue. In addition, Zech informed East County Magazine, “The exact cause of the fire is still not determined—but the fire appears to be suspicious in nature.”

2 INJURED IN FIRE AT LA MESA CONDO

 

May 25, 2011 (La Mesa)-- Firefighters from Heartland Fire & Rescue in La Mesa responded to a fire last night at 9:56 p.m. in the 5700 Block of Baltimore Drive. Upon arrival, the second floor condo was well involved in fire and the fire was extending to the third floor.

MOTHER, RUN OVER BY SUV WITH CHILDREN INSIDE, DIES AT HOSPITAL

 

May 5, 2011 (La Mesa) – Heidi Durfey, 24, has died after her sports utility vehicle (SUV) with her three young children inside rolled backward 60 feet and ran over her.  The tragedy occurerd on the driveway of her home in the 8700 block of Glenira Avene in La Mesa around 9:20 a.m. 

 

She became caught under the SUV as it rolled and was dragged beneath the vehicle. “It came to rest in the street with the front end of the vehicle on top of the victim’s head and chest,” said Sonny Saghera with Heartland Fire & Rescue.

HEARTLAND FIRE AND RESCUE PRACTICE VEHICLE EXTRICATION

 

 

May 2, 2011 (East County) -- During the week of April 23, 2011, all personnel from Heartland Fire and Rescue serving the cities of El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove attended vehicle extrication training. C&D Towing made the training possible by providing twenty vehicles to practice the vehicle extrication and rescue techniques. The training was especially valuable because newer cars continue to change.

May 2, 2011 (San Diego's East County) -- On Sunday May 1, 2011, a training event gave East County agencies an opportunity to work together to improve mutual-aid responses. In addition the Multi Agency Drill provides fire agencies such as CALFIRE, Sycuan and San Diego Rural a rare opportunity to participate in a commercial structure drill. The San Miguel Fire District hosted the Multi Company/Multi-Agency Drill. The training took place at the former Blockbuster Video on Campo Road and Conrad Drive, Casa De Oro.

 

All personnel from Heartland Fire & Rescue Department, serving the cities of El Cajon, La Mesa, and Lemon Grove, participated in vehicle extrication training. The special training was made possible by C&D Towing, which provided 20 vehicles for emergency personnel to practice vehicle extrication & rescue techniques.

AFTER POWER SHUT OFF, RESIDENTS USE PROPANE TO HEAT HOME, CAUSING FIRE

March 7, 2011 (El Cajon) – A fire at a home located at 154 N. Westwind Drive in El Cajon last night caused $75,000 to $100,000 in damage, displacing three men and causing minor injury to one.

 

“Upon investigation, it was found that the tenants of the home had been using propane gas inside the home for lighting and heat since the electrical power had been turned off to the house,” a press release from Heartland Fire & Rescue stated. “One of the tenants, while attempting to transfer propane to smaller containers, accidentally set off the blaze.”

LANDING GEAR ON PLANE COLLAPSES AT GILLESPIE FIELD

 


December 7, 2010 (El Cajon) – The landing gear collapsed on a Piper PA18 fixed-wing plane at Gillespie Field in El Cajon today, causing minor damage to the underside shortly after 3 p.m. There was no injury to the pilot and no passengers were on board.

MORNING FIRE DESTROYS HOME IN EL CAJON

 

 

July 12, 2010 (El Cajon) -- Shortly after 7:00 this morning, Heartland Fire Dispatch received calls of a structure fire in the 1000 block of Mollison Avenue in El Cajon. As crews arrived on scene, they found the attached garage of the home fully involved in flames and spreading into the home.
