PRODUCE PICKS: THANKSGIVING FEAST AND HOLIDAY RECIPES

By Greg Dunne

November 21, 2015 (East County).  It is coming up on Thanksgiving and time to eat! It is also a time for gathering with family and friends. I am a healthily-conscience eater most of the time, but on Thanksgiving the rulebook goes out the window. I am already thinking of all the yummy food that’s going to be on the dining table and without a doubt will probably eat way too much of everything. Half of what most of us eat on Thanksgiving is healthy food. Turkey, yams, green beans, and cranberries for a few - but don’t count calories, let’s just eat. There are some awesome recipes at the bottom of the article by my wife, Dianne.

“We’re excited today to celebrate the idea of Shop East County,” said Eric Lund, Chamber president.  The average person spends $805 each sopping season on gifts, decorations and food, according to the National Retail Association – money that when spent locally creates sales tax revenues that can be used to fund police, firefighting and other things that benefit the people of East County.

MEDICAL MINUTE: STROKE PREVENTION

By Dr. Omar Ghausi

November 21, 2015 (San Diego)--On average, someone suffers a stroke every 45 seconds. The good news is that 80% of all strokes are preventable. Equally important, patients who arrive at an emergency room within 3 hours of their first symptoms tend to have less disability 3 months after a stroke than those who delayed care.

Some of the keys to managing risk factors are to control high blood pressure, eat a healthy diet, maintain a healthy weight, exercise, don’t smoke and limit alcohol use.

HAGGEN SUPERMARKET ON AVOCADO BLVD. IN LA MESA FINALLY CLOSES ITS DOORS

By Jake Christie

November 19, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) - Over the weekend of November 15th, the Haggen supermarket at 3681 Avocado Boulevard finally ran out of food and other salable items and closed for good. The store, located in the Rancho San Diego Village strip mall, was originally a Vons before Haggen bought the chain out in Southern California and then subsequently declared bankruptcy. Over the month of October the store slowly began winding down operations by not taking in new stock, selling off the food and sundries, and gradually barricading the empty aisles off as the food ran out.

REMBRANDT’S MASTERFUL ART STYLE REVIVED BY A COUNTESS IN CARLSBAD

Artist’s works will be auctioned to benefit East County Magazine and Grossmont Hospital Foundation

By Miriam Raftery

November 18, 2015 (San Diego) – The paintings of Countess Jadwiga “Inka” Zamoyska of Zamość are stunning depictions of nature and portraits  with a masterful application of light and shadows to create mystery, dramatic effects and beauty.  Her works evoke the style of Rembrandt, the 17th century Old Master famed for his illuminating imagery.

That similarity is no accident. Like Rembrandt, Countess Zamoyska comes from a European family and has endured her share of life challenges, finding therapy in her first love, art. “My passion to paint is fueled by the ever-changing beauty that, if we let it, confronts us at every turn,” she states. “When I see it, I crave to raise it to canvas.”

Astonishingly, her current portfolio of exquisite portraits, still life, landscapes, seascapes and snow scenes have all been created in the past few years—and next up, this remarkably talented artist has agreed to create a painting of East County wilderness which will be auctioned on November 20th with proceeds benefitting both Grossmont Hospital Foundation and launch of a new special section on East County Magazine covering animal rescue groups and wildlife/animal news in our region. She will also paint a custom animal painting to be auctioned at a December 5th party for the animals, also benefitting our new “Animal Action” section..

By Miriam Raftery

“You should be proud that a school like this is helping students out. Are you thinking of the students and our futures, or just yourselves and your money?”—Jackie Ramirez, 16, young mother and student at Diego Valley Charter

November 19, 2015 (San Diego’s East County) –Wearing green shirts reading “Defend School Choice”,  over 100 parents, students and teachers turned out to protest the Grossmont Union High School District’s litigation that seeks to shut down multiple charter schools.  Speaker after speaker gave emotional testimony tonight, pleading with the GUHSD board to save their schools.

A lawsuit filed by the district seeks to shut down Diego Valley Public Charter, which serves at-risk  students including many Chaldeans and other minorities, drop-outs , pregnant students, and students who have aged out of the public high school system, as well as Julian Charter School-Alpine Academy. A hearing on the case is scheduled for June 10, 2016 at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Joan M. Lewis in San Diego Superior Court.

November 17, 2015 ( La Mesa) - Grossmont's On The Verge is an interesting diversion on a November autumn night--a character driven play with tremendous acting. Written by television scribe Eric Overmyer and directed by Beth Duggan, the plot on this one is a little thin, leaving the audience a bit confused. Laughter was sprinkled throughout the audience the entire show, yet something was missing.
