June 10, 2012 (Lakeside) – San Diego County’s third wildfire in one day has charred several acres in El Monte Valley on the north side of Lake Jennings near El Monte Park. No structures are threatened, according to Cal Fire.
Update June 10, 2012 6 p.m. - The Horse fire has been stopped at 12 acres, Lakeside Fire Chief Andy Parr told ECM. Fixed wing aircraft and helicopters were used to battle the blaze under a unified command with Cal-Fire. No homes were lost, Chief Parr confirmed.

Update: 2:25 p.m. These fires have been held to a total of 12 acres; air tankers are being dismissed. Fire is contained but not yet out; no structures were lost.
June 10, 2012 (San Diego) – The San Diego Planning Commission on Friday approved the Energia Sierra Juarez Gen-Tie project, a power line that Sempra Energy plans to utilize to bring energy from a planned Mexico wind facility across the border to the U.S. That facility’s future is in limbo, however, since a Mexican court has agreed to hear a lawsuit challenging Energia Sierra Juarez.

June 10, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Bill Garrett, president of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Governing Board, and Mary Kay Rosinski, board vice president, have been re-elected without opposition for another four-year term. Because they had no challengers, the names of Garrett and Rosinski were not on the June 5 ballot for East County voters. The college district operates Grossmont College in El Cajon and Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego, serving almost 30,000 students.

June 10, 2012 (La Mesa) -- The Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library is featuring an exhibit of 15 landscape paintings by Santee artist Barbara McVey through the month of June.
McVey worked at schools with special education students until she retired in 1999. Then, she taught art history and the history of famous artists at elementary schools for five years. Today, she focuses on her artwork. Her exhibition at the Herrick Library features abstract watercolor and oil pastel paintings.

While concessions from the unions will certainly be part of it, the real solution is much more complex. Too bad that the administration and all but one of the school board members were willing to turn away from the reality, and instead cast a stone at a politically reliable target: public unions.
June 10, 2012 (Valley Center) -- Bates Nut Farm hosts the American Cancer Society’s “Relay for Life of Valley Center” from 9:00 am June 16 – 9:00 am June 17. This overnight relay-style event raises funds to help the American Cancer society save lives. Over 15 teams have already been formed, and the members from each team will take turns walking the course over the 24 hour period. Food, games and activities provide entertainment and fundraising opportunities throughout the event, and the family-friendly environment provides a sense of community.

So we took a team of our reporters and photographers to a media night preview of the San Diego County Fair at Del Mar, which opened yesterday.We watched bungee jumpers, an acrobatic dog, and 4-H kids with pigs and goats. We savored our fill of fair food. Plus we met up with some East County participants--including Chief Don Butz and the Viejas firefighters, who showed off the shark-toothed, souped-up car they will be driving in the demolition derby on June 16.

June 9, 2012 (Santee) – The city of Santee’s Summer Concert Series, now in its 29th year, begins June 14.Performances are every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. through August 16, except July 5.The concerts take place at the Town Center Community Park at the north side of the San Diego River.
The 9 concert series features the return of three musical acts that attracted sizeable crowds last year, as well as an eclectic lineup of 7 other bands that range from country to classic rock.

June 9, 2012 (Sa Diego) -- Director Robert S. Mueller, III has named Daphne Hearn special agent in charge (SAC) of the FBI’s San Diego Division. Ms. Hearn most recently served as the SAC of the Administrative Division in Los Angeles.
Ms. Hearn began her career as a special agent with the FBI in December 1991. She first reported to the Buffalo Division, where she worked a variety of programs, including the initiation of an organized crime investigation into a large-scale, international illegal gambling operation with ties to La Cosa Nostra (LCN) families in several cities. In May 1998, she transferred to the Chicago Division, where she worked on the Organized Crime Task Force investigating the LCN’s long-term control over the town of Cicero, Illinois.
June 9, 2012 (San Diego) -- Sister and brother team, Danamarie, 17 and Collin McNicholl-Carter, 14 from La Mesa have been bringing awareness to the San Diego Adaptive Sports Foundation (SDASF) by recruiting their friends to walk in the 3rd annual “Stroll and Roll” events since 2010. Over 250 people attended this year’s event on May 20, 2012 to walk and/or roll in wheelchairs to raise money to send children to SDASF Jr. Wheelchair Sports Camp on Mission Bay.
