July 1, 2017 (Washington D.C.) – The U.S. House of Representatives has passed House Resolutions 3003 and 3004, measures aimed at cracking down on undocumented immigrants.  The measures, which punish sanctuary cities and states by withholding key funds, also boost penalties for certain immigrants who reenter the U.S. illegally after being deported three or more times.

ARSON ARREST IN TRAILS FIRE

July 1, 2017 (Escondido) – CAL FIRE law enforcement officers on Thursday arrested Jose Duran Aguirre, 31, a transient in Escondido, on arson charges.  He is accused of recklessly setting fire to a forest land and for discharging an emergency signaling device in a manner other than the permitted use.

July 1, 2017 (Lemon Grove) – Manuel Miguel Moreno, a Lemon Grove resident who was raised in Santee, passed away June 26th at Grossmont Hospital of injuries from a car crash eight months ago in Ramona. He was surrounded by his family.

July 1, 2017 (La Mesa) – A motorcyclist crashed into the rear of a vehicle on Interstate 8 east in La Mesa yesterday near the Jackson Drive exit shortly before noon.  The motorcyclist was reportedly unconscious following the crash.

July 1, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) – Newly appointed Grossmont Union High School District Citizens Bond Oversight Committee member Lou Russo has forwarded a copy of the most recent meeting minutes from March 29 to ECM.  There were several items of note including audit results, status of bond projects and other construction at district schools, an update on the lawsuit filed against the GUHSD over the proposed Alpine High School on which the district has spent over $3.2 million to date, and a projected $11.1 million budget deficit for the district.

PURSUIT OF DUI SUSPECT IN LA MESA ENDS IN CRASH ON I-8

GOLF TOURNAMENT RAISES OVER $64,000 FOR MILITARY FAMILIES

July 1, 2017 (San Diego) — Local nonprofits United Through Reading (UTR) and the Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) hosted a first-ever joint golf tournament on June 23rd to support military and their families through the challenges of deployment. The tournament raised over $64,000 while celebrating the courage and strength of local San Diego military and their families, also highlighting key roles these organizations play in their lives.

CAL FIRE WARNS OF DANGERS AS HOLIDAY WEEKEND APPROACHES

July 1, 2017 (San Diego) - With the Fourth of July holiday quickly approaching, CAL FIRE is reminding everyone to do their part to prevent fires and injuries caused by fireworks. Two out of five fires on the 4th of July are caused by fireworks, more than any other cause of fires. The majority of these incidents are related to either the use of illegal fireworks or state-approved fireworks that are used incorrectly.  All Fireworks are illegal in San Diego County including state-approved fireworks.

June 30, 2017 (San Diego) - The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department wants everyone to have a safe Independence Day free of serious injuries or jail time. That means never driving if you’ve been drinking alcohol or taking drugs (including medications that impair your driving), never setting off illegal fireworks and not allowing juveniles to drink alcohol at your house party.

BLACK CAR FOLLOWED GIRL, 13, IN EL CAJON

June 30, 2017 (El Cajon) – El Cajon Police Department warns that a 13-year-old girl walking her dog shortly before 1 p.m. today in the 400 block of Hart Drive in unincorporated El Cajon was followed by a black, four-door sedan.

The driver, described as a Hispanic male around age 25, thin with short black hair, is wanted for annoying a minor.

June 30, 2017 (Sacramento) – U.S. District judge Roger Benitez with California’s Southern District Court has granted a preliminary injunction sought by the National Rifle Association, temporarily blocking part of Proposition 63 that required Californians to dispose of large-capacity ammunition magazines by Saturday or face fines and potentially, jail time.

June 30, 2017 (Santee) – Our volunteer at East County Magazine, Kim Cooney,  needs a new home for her 9-year-old beagle, Angus.  She says Angus is good with children, cats and non-aggressive dogs.

Kim is moving out of state and is also slated for knee surgery. She is no longer able to care for and walk Angus, so she needs to find him a new home immediately.

ALVARADO HOSPITAL CELEBRATES EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT EXPANSION WITH TOPPING OUT CEREMONY

June 30, 2017 (San Diego) -- San Diego-based general contractor Pacific Building Group raised the final beam Thursday to complete or “top out” the steel structure of Alvarado Hospital Medical Center’s expanded emergency department while 100 guests looked on. Hospital staff and community members signed the beam, now situated within the structure.

ARMED AND DANGEROUS HOMICIDE SUSPECT WANTED BY SHERIFF

June 30, 2017 (San Diego ) – The San Diego County Sheriff is asking all County residents to be on the looking for Pablo Duran, who goes by multiple aliases and is considered armed and dangerous.

He is wanted for suspicion of murdering his employer, contractor Robert Pierro,on June 7 in Vista.  According to a press release issued today, he fled from law enforcement and his whereabouts are unknown. There is an active felony arrest for him.

This is down from 35.4 teacher lay-offs and 21 staff eliminations originally resolved.

DUI CHECKPOINT IN EL CAJON NETS ZERO ARRESTS

June 29, 2017 (El Cajon) – A DUI/driver’s license checkpoint in El Cajon on June 24th resulted in zero arrests.  Around 20 law enforcement personnel from El Cajon Police Department, including officers as well as five cadets and five senior volunteers, participated in the checkpoint in the 1400 block of East Washington Avenue from 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.

DO RATTLESNAKE VACCINES FOR DOGS REALLY WORK?

June 28, 2017 (San Diego’s East County) – The canine rattlesnake vaccine has been administered to over 100,000 dogs since it came on the market in the early 2000s. While only about 1 percent of dogs had side effects, the bad news is “there remains little fact-based data to support the efficacy of the vaccine to date,” according to Valerie Wiebe, Pharm.D with the University of California, Davis. In other words, it’s not clear if the vaccine actually works.
