June 11, 2014 (Los Angeles) -- Judge Rolf Treu of the Los Angeles Superior Court delivered his ruling this Tuesday, June 10th, on the highly controversial Vergara v. California trial, which sought to determine the constitutionality of statutes which grant teachers tenure, complicate the teacher layoff process, and value seniority over skill when determining which teachers must be laid off.

June 11, 2014 (Ocotillo Wells) -- Nearly five years ago, 16-year-old Mickey Guidry disappeared in the Anza-Borrego Desert.  The Jeep he’d taken from his family was found broken down and abandoned, its tire worn down to the rim near Fish Creek wash, 22 miles from the nearest highway  over Thanksgiving weekend.  He has not been seen since November 26, 2009.

HIT AND RUN FATALITIES, ON RISE COUNTYWIDE, TAKE HEAVY TOLL ON VICTIMS' FAMILIES

June 10, 2014 (San Diego)--Most say the hardest feeling in the world is for a parent to bury a child, but how about a child having to bury a parent? That’s the reality for a hit and run incident victim’s child.

Anouchka  Mihaylova (photo), 62, a Bulgarian immigrant and professor at UC San Diego, died in her husband’s arms after being struck by a hit and run driver on May 17th while walking to their favorite restaurant in Rancho Bernardo. She is among a growing number of victims countywide killed  this year by drivers who fled the scene.

The accident has left her family surprised and  heartbroken. Her death is also a blow to the medical community.  Before her passing, Anouchka Mihaylova worked in the Department of Bioengineering at UCSD, where she was doing research on the artificial heart.

June 8, 2014(San Diego)--Sheriff's Deputies went door to door today in Borrego Springs to inform the community about a Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) now living in their neighborhood. Terry Allan Stone was released from Coalinga State Mental Hospital on Tuesday, June 3rd and has registered as an SVP with the Sheriff's Department.

June 9, 2014 (San Diego)--In April 2014, the White House Task Force to Protect Students from Sexual Assault issued a series of recommendations for college and university campuses related to responding to and preventing sexual assault. Given that one in five college-aged women endure a sexual assault, the White House is to be applauded for prioritizing this issue and for organizing the task force. But of course, it should be so simple to recommend that campuses do the right thing.

It was time for the first heat of the Demolition Derby, an event sponsored by the Viejas Tribe and State Farm to benefit the Burn Institute of San Diego. June 8, 2014 (Julian)—Hundreds converged in Julian May 16-17 for the third annual Julian Wild and Scenic Film Festival to benefit the Volcan Mountain Foundation. Each year, a committee from Julian travels to Nevada to watch about 100 films there, choosing a selection of the best to show here.

Judges select the best of the best shown in Julian, plus an Audience Choice award chosen by the festival attendees.  This year, the awards were designed by famed architect James Hubbell .  The winners are:

POLICE PITCH IN TO HELP HEROIC TEEN WHO LOST FAMILY

June 6, 2014 (El Cajon) – The El Cajon Police Officers Association (ECPOA) has pitched in to try and lift the spirits of an immigrant teen who suffered life-threatening  injuries trying to save his mother’s life. 

The boy, 15, nicknamed “Buddy”, moved to  El Cajon 15 months ago with his mother and adult brother, after his father was kidnapped in Iraq.  His father has not been seen or heard from since, and is presumed dead, said Travis Howard, vice president of the ECPOA.

But now, Buddy is without both parents--and his brother.
