July 7, 2012 (San Diego) --  The San Diego Half Marathon, a one-of-a kind race and fundraising event with 100 percent of its net proceeds benefiting local charities, today proudly announced that $100,000 is being donated to local San Diego-area charities from its hugely successful inaugural race last March. San Diego-area charity partners from the 2012 race include Lake Murray Playground Project, San Diego Police Department Communications Division Kitchen/Break room Renovation, Toys for Joy, Robb Field and Hickman Field.

May 13, 2012 (Santee) -- The 13th annual East County Senior Health Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Friday, May 18, at the Santee Trolley Square shopping center, 9850 Mission Gorge Road, in Santee. Admission is free. The public is invited to attend. 
The East County Senior Services Providers, a coalition of community organizations and agencies that serve seniors in the East County and organizers of the health fair, said more than 60 exhibit booths will include free health screenings for stroke, blood pressure, blood glucose/diabetes, video otoscope and more.

May 13, 2012 (San Diego)—San Diego’s Planning Commission voted unanimously to have staff evaluate health impacts of wind turbines on people and wildlife. Commissioners balked at approving a proposed county wind ordinance or changes to the Boulevard community plan that could make it easier to gain approval of large-scale wind projects—taking the sails out of the wind industry.

HOMEGOODS OPENING NEW STORE IN EL CAJON ON MAY 20

 

May 11, 2012  (El Cajon) -- HomeGoods, the off-price store dedicated to home fashions, will open a new store in El Cajon on Sunday, May 20 at 8:00 a.m. The 25,000 square-foot store is located in the Westfield Parkway, Fletcher Parkway and Johnson Avenue.  With the addition of this store, HomeGoods will have four stores in the San Diego marketplace.

JACUMBA’S FIRST “BLUES FEST” OFFERS FREE FAMILY FRIENDLY FUN MAY 12

 

May 1, 2012 (Jacumba)-- The Jacumba community will be “jammin and wailin” on Saturday May 12th as the Jacumba Arts Council presents their first “Spring Blues Fest” at the Highland Center on old Highway 80. “People have been very enthusiastic about the event,” says Celia Sigmon, President of Jacumba Arts Council. “There have been some wonderful changes happening in Jacumba so we wanted to celebrate with the community and fellow music lovers. We also feel that the arts, especially music, should be available to all. This is why we are putting on a free event that is suitable for families. Everyone is invited to attend and enjoy our scenic backcountry location!”
 
Lots of local and not so local artists will be there. There will be pulled- pork sandwiches, hot dogs, water and soft drinks available at the center. The Jacumba Women’s Club will have delicious baked goods available for sale. A raffle is planned with a Fender guitar and amp as the grand prize.
 
“We are particularly excited about the variety and talent of the musicians who will be appearing,” enthuses Joe Marshall, Event Coordinator and one of the featured performers. “BC Blues is a real get back together performance by seasoned music professionals. Its members are: Sam Cannon, Allan B3 Carrol on one of his Hammond Organs, Bob Horne, Bruce Craw, Danny Berg and Majid Rahmen from Imperial Valley.  Alex Gomez and the Gomez Blues Project will also appear. This is a fine blues group from San Diego with quite a following. Members are Alex Gomez on lead vocals and guitar, Gregg Miller on vocals and drums and others. Don Belter will also play. He is a blues artist from San Diego and formally a member of the Pine Valley Posse. Singer-songwriter Michael Seth Smith will be there from Boulevard. He has some great sounds!”
 
Joe’s group, One Way Out, will also play.  One Way Out is another great blues group that has been retired for some time but is getting back together for this event. Its members are JoeMama on the Harp, Wild Willie on Vocals, Mark the Shark on lead guitar, Rockin Raul on the Bass and Wonderful Ernie on the Drums.

MAYORAL CANDIDATE FILNER URGES PLANNING COMMISSION TO OPPOSE ILL-CONCEIVED SANTEE POWER PLANT

 

April 26, 2012 (San Diego) -- U.S. Congressman and Mayoral candidate Bob Filner spoke in front of the San Diego Planning Commission today to oppose the “Quail Brush” Power Plant, slated for construction next to the San Diego Mission Trails Regional Park. The site is within the City of San Diego, but will have negative impacts in neighboring Santee. The Planning Commission was deliberating on the decision to re-zone the proposed location from “open space” to “industrial use.”
