JUDGE RULES SD COUNTY WATER AUTHORITY IS OWED $188 MILLION

September 2, 2015 (San Diego)--The San Diego County Water Authority is owed $188.3 million plus interest from the Los Angeles-based Metropolitan Water District, a judge has affirmed in a final ruling which found Metropolitan charged illegal rates to the San Diego district from 2011 to 2014.

DRONE ZONES: BILLS ADVANCE IN CA TO CRACKDOWN ON UNMANNED AIRCRAFT

September 2, 2015 (Sacramento) - An estimated 700,000 drones are expected to be sold in the U.S. this year to hobbyists –a 63% increase over last year, the Consumer Electronics Association reports.   Now the California Legislature is scrambling to enact laws to restrict some uses of those drones after numerous complaints of safety and privacy concerns.

Despite the noise and dust, we’re excited to see a long-awaited campus modernization project finally underway. Thanks to bond funding provided by East County voters through Proposition U, the 49 classrooms in our 155,000-square-foot main building will be fully renovated for the first time since the school opened more than 40 years ago.

ON THE TRAIL WITH GARRY MCCLINTOCK: A MEMOIR

September 1, 2015 (Descanso) -- When I think of Garry McClintock, what I will remember more than anything else is his attitude towards life.  He was always upbeat and positive, and full of curiosity of the world around him.  He had the inner and spiritual strength to continue to carry that on despite his long illness. When you spoke with Garry you always felt that he was really interested in what you had to say, and you always seemed to go away better for it.  His shop was always somewhere that you could not only buy a saddle or tack or have it repaired but a place where you could find out what was happening, in Descanso or in the equestrian community.  It was as much a social center as it was a saddle shop.  And I cannot remember him in any conversation ever saying a bad thing about anybody.

WORKER FALLS TO DEATH AT JAMUL CASINO SITE

September 1, 2015 (Jamul) – A 56-year-old construction worker fell to his death at the site of the Hollywood Casino Jamul this morning, Cal Fire and the Sheriff’s office confirm.

The accident occurred about 8:20 a.m. at the construction site located on Jamul Indian Village property.  The worker fell off a 38-foot-platform atop a man lift, said Sergeant Matthew Cook III from the Rancho San Diego Sheriff’s station.

LARGE BLACK CAT SIGHTING REPORTING AT CEDAR CREEK FALLS

Today, we received an email from Chris and Peter Ruth, Forest Service volunteers and trail head hosts at Cedar Creek Falls.  “We now have had two reports of a black `cat-like’ animal down by the falls,” they wrote, adding that there is water in the pond though the waterfall is dry this time of year.

Multiple hikers reported seeing a “large black animal” resembling a big cat in a tree near the falls in San Diego's backcountry in Cleveland National Forest between Julian and Descanso. The sightings were reported to the ranger.  In addition, the Forest Service volunteers state, “Today, two female volunteers who hike the trail and pick up trash heard growling noises three times. With the drought, we wonder if animals are frequenting the pond to get water.”

SOLITARY CONFINEMENT SETTLEMENT ANNOUNCED BY STATE

September 1, 2015 (Oakland)--Thousands of inmates are set to be released from solitary confinement in California prisons, following settlement of a legal case reached between the state and prisoners held in isolation for a decade or more at Pelican Bay State Prison. Prisoners there spend up to 23 hours a day confined in windowless cells with no access to mail, the law library or other services. A United Nations official has called the confinement cruel and unusual punishment akin to torture.

August 31, 2015 (San Diego) – In exclusive interviews with the East County Magazine Show on KNSJ Radio (89.1 FM) aired today, Dan Jauregui, better known as “Boltman” and prominent attorney James Quinn shared strategies to keep the Chargers in town.

"It's been an emotional roller coaster," says Jauregui, who likens the Chargers' secret dealings with the city of Carson in Los Angeles to "finding out your spouse is cheating...As fans, we're going to take a stand."  Jaregui, on behalf of fans, accuses the NFL of operating as a monopoly. He has sent a letter to City Attorney Jan Goldsmith asking the City to file a lawsuit to keep the Chargers in town.

Quinn, via phone interview in New York, says the City of San Diego has a strong legal case against the National Football League (NFL) for violating the Sherman Anti-Trust Act and its own NFL charter. Quinn has sued the NFL several times on anti-trust grounds—and has a 100% winning track record.  But so far, the City has punted on its option to file suit--and Boltman is leading fans in a charge to persuade the City to score a win for fans at the courthouse.

The team’s run ended on Thursday night when they lost to Pearland Little League of Texas 9-7 in eight innings.  They are hosting a coming home party at the Sweetwater Valley Little League complex tomorrow, September 1st.

BARONA BAND OF MISSION INDIANS TO CELEBRATE TRADITIONS OF NATIVE AMERICAN CULTURE AT 45th ANNUAL POWWOW SEPT. 4-6

August 24, 2015 (San Diego) – The Barona Band of Mission Indians invites San Diegans to experience Native American dancing, music and traditional food at the 45th annual Barona Powwow, which will be held on Labor Day weekend at the Barona Sports Park located on the Barona Indian Reservation. The three-day celebration starts on Friday, September 4 with Gourd Dancing at 6 p.m. and the spectacular Grand Entry at 7 p.m. and continues throughout the weekend on Saturday and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. Admission is free.

“For the past 45 years, the Barona Powwow has been a wonderful opportunity for Native Americans to not only celebrate our heritage and traditions with each other but to share our culture with San Diego,” said Barona Tribal Councilwoman Beth Glasco. “Over the years our Powwow has grown to become one of the most anticipated in our area and we are proud to invite the community out to experience this wonderful cultural celebration.”
