It comes in the form of breast cancer, leiomyosarcoma, primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), prostate cancer, Askin's Sarcoma, or lymphoma, among many more. PSC, a rare disease that scars the ducts that carry bile from the liver to the small intestine to aid digestion, is the form of cancer that took the life of former NFL star Walter Payton.
Jamie Reno, journalist, singer-songwriter, patient advocate and 15-year survivor of stage IV non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, has written an all-new edition of a book that I had earlier had the honor of reviewing; Hope Begins In The Dark: 40 Lymphoma Survivors Tell Their Exclusive Life Stories.
October 2, 2012 (Carlsbad) -- The San Diego County Water Authority released a proposed Water Purchase Agreement with Poseidon Resources, the private developer of the planned seawater desalination plant in Carlsbad. The release opens a public review period that includes two special evening public meetings to share information on the agreement and to receive public comment.
The agreement specifies the proposed commercial and financial terms for the production and delivery of water from the planned desalination plant to the Water Authority’s regional water delivery and treatment system. It also includes terms for the potential purchase of the plant by the Water Authority.

October 1, 2012 (Jacumba) – “There is hope for the families who were affected by the wildland fire,” says Lorrie Ostrander, who has been organizing a fundraiser to help the 11 families who lost their homes in the Shockey Fire. “With the help of Alpine Albertsons, Jacumba Women's Club, Jacumba Lounge, Manzanita Diner and other local residents, we are having a dinner." Donations will benefit the families who lost everything, she added.
The benefit dinner will be held on Friday, October 12 from 4-8 p.m. at the Jacumba Highland Senior Center, 44681 Old Highway 80 in Jacumba 91934. A $5 donation at the door is requested.
October 3, 2012 (Denver) -- All eyes will be on Denver tonight as the first presidential debate of the 2012 election season gets under way. The debate between President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney will focus on domestic issues.
Both candidates could be at risk here, says Ken Bickers, a political science professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder. The economic recovery on Obama's watch has been slow, he says, while Romney was caught on video saying 47 percent of Americans are dependent on government entitlements - comments many said made him seem out of touch with the average person.
October 2, 2012 (Pine Valley) – An earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale struck at 1:28 a.m., jolting some East County residents awake. The quake was centered 22 miles east of Pine Valley and 10 miles northwest of Ocotillo.
“Kind of unnerving,” said videographer Paul Kruze, a Rancho San Diego resident. The USGS classifies the quake as "moderate" which can include light damage.
Many people are not aware that while major quakes have been rare in our region in recent times, historically many major quakes have occurred.
October 2, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – It saddened me to read the comments of San Diego Fire Captain Frank DeClercq which followed an article in the U-T San Diego September 24 titled Supervisor Jacob: Heed Authorities in Fire Area.
Captain DeClercq wrote, “Once again, Supevisor Jacob is in denial. The County of San Diego spends a mere $15 million dollars on fire protection while Orange and Los Angeles Counties spend $250 and $500 million dollars protecting their citizens. The City of San Diego taxpayers foot the bill to send City of San Diego firefighting crews to unincorporated East County to extinguish their fire. Unbelievable!” He added, ““Having and showing off a patch does not make a fire department.”
Update 6 p.m.: The suspect has been identified as Paul Carl Tomasini. He is being charged with murder, the Sheriff's office reports this evening.
October 1, 2012 (Santee)—A man with stab wounds is being questioned by Sheriff’s homicide detectives in connection with the death of a woman found deceased in a home in the 10500 block of Strathmore Drive in Santee last night.

October 1, 2012 (Chula Vista)—Family members and human rights advocates seek answers from authorities following the bizarre shooting death of Valeria Tachiquin-Alvarado, 32, mother of five young children, by a Border Patrol officer in plainclothes. A candlelight vigil for the victim is planned tonight at 6 p.m.
Witness accounts vary sharply from the initial report released by authorities. The San Diego Medical Examiner has ruled the death a homicide.

September 30, 2012 (San Diego’s East County) – A 27-year-old Coronado man collapsed and died yesterday on the return hike from Three Sisters Falls. According to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office, the man was hiking with three friends on the trail in the Descanso/Julian area when he collapsed.
“It was a hot day and the falls apparently were dried up,” the Medical Examiner’s website reports. Temperatures were in the 80s, with an excessive heat warning from the National Weather Service in effect.
September 30, 2012 (San Diego) -- San Diego Police Department Homicide Unit detectives are investigating a murder that occurred on a Chollas Creek street this morning. At 5:34 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 5000 block of Sterling Court on a report of an assault with a deadly weapon. They arrived to find the victim in front of a home, suffering from several apparent stab wounds. Paramedics arrived and transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment. The victim died at the hospital this morning at 7:12 a.m.
September 30, 2012 (El Cajon)—Councilman Tony Ambrose was appointed in March to fill the vacancy left by the resignation of Jillian Hanson-Cox. Now he’s running for re-election, one of seven candidates vying for three seats. September 30, 2012 (Ocotillo ) -- U.S. District Court Judge William Hayes has dismissed a lawsuit filed by Community Advocates for Renewable Energy Stewardship (CARES). The group sought an injunction to halt construction of the Ocotillo Express wind energy facility on public land. Hayes ruled that the plaintiffs lacked standing.

Johnson, along with Deputy Ari Perez, were shot by a child abuse suspect with a high-powered rifle. Perez remains hospitalized following surgery.

Temperatures could reach 110 in the low deserts and 100 in high desert areas. In San Diego County valleys, 95 to 105 degree temperatures are forecast, with highs up to 95 in coastal and mountain areas.

Seeing flames coming from her stove, she tried to douse the fire with water, which caused the fire to spread. She then evacuated the apartment, which suffered $50,000 in damages to the structure and contents.
September 27, 2012 (El Cajon) – The Water Conservation Garden at Cuyamaca College will offer a fire-wise gardening seminar with Greg Rubin, native plant expert from California’s Own Native Landscape Design. September 28, 2012 (San Diego)- Republican Michael Crimmins is running against Democrat Juan Vargas for Congress in the 51st district, which includes the entire border with Mexico and Imperial Valley. Crimmins says he running because he wants to make a difference. His qualifications include military service and an education background. He is a retired military officer and San Diego teacher with two master degrees in education. Currently he resides in Point Loma, which is not in the district. If elected, he says he would move to Imperial Beach. Married in Florida in 1977, he divorced in 1988 and has a daughter, Ashley, a flight attendant.
