FATAL CRASH ON I-15

November 21, 2010 (San Diego) – Angela Dawn Mendez, 33, died in a pre-dawn 4:45 a.m. yesterday morning on I-15 south of State Route 76 in Fallbrook. She was the driver and sole occupant of a 2004 Range Rover Discovery that veered off the highway, rolled down an embankment several times, and landed on its roof on a service road below.

MISSING LAKESIDE TEEN MAY BE VICTIM OF FOUL PLAY

November 20, 2010 (Lakeside) – Christopher Cory Carioscia, 17, told his family he was going surfing at Pacific Beach on the evening of October 26th. The former El Capitan High School student hasn’t been seen by his family since.

The Sheriff’s department never notified the media about the teen’s disappearance, although it’s been reported on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Chldren website and other missing children sites. Now, the Union-Tribune reports that Carioscia’s car was found burned on the Barona reservation the day after he vanished.

EXPLOSIVE SEARCH: I-15 SHUT DOWN AT ESCONDIDO TODAY

Update 5:30 p.m.  The freeway is now reopened.  Authorities used a robot to detonate six explosive devices, Incident Page Network reports.  More details at 10 News:  http://www.10news.com/news/25843031/detail.html 

Update 11:45 a.m.:  Closure was delayed but the highway is now closed as of 11:21 a.m.  in the southbound direction only.  Authorities have decided to leave the northbound lanes open.

Explosives have been found in a home in the 1900 block of Via Scott, where homeowner George Jakubek has been arrested.  A gardener, Mario Garcia, was seriously injured yesterday when an explosive went off, damaging his foot.  Several homes in the neighborhood have also been evacuated as the investigation continues. 

 

November 19, 2010 (Escondido) -- ECM news Partner Channel 10 reports that discovery of explosives at an Escondido home will result in a shut down of both sides of Interstate 15  from 9 a.m. to noon today (Friday).

November 16, 2010 (San Diego) -- Due to the increase in traffic collisions caused by drivers illegally using non-hands-free cell phones, San Diego County Law Enforcement agencies are joining forces on November 17 to focus enforcement efforts on this danger to safety of the motoring public. The San Diego, Oceanside, and El Cajon offices of California Highway Patrol as well as the Sheriff’s Department, San Diego State University police, and police departments in Carlsbad, Chula Vista, Coronado, El Cajon, Escondido, National City, Oceanside, San Diego will be aggressively seeking out drivers violating the “hands free” cell phone law.

November 15, 2010 (Ocotillo) –The odor of burned rubber still hangs heavy in the air along Highway 98 east of Ocotillo, where five people lost their life in a horrific crash on Saturday. A lone bouquet of flowers in the sand serves as a silent memorial to four members of the Lakeside Saddle Tramp Club and a car passenger who died at the scene.

Driver of car that hit motorcycles may face charges; 2nd driver in gold Honda Civic still sought

November 15, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – Four members of the Lakeside Saddle Tramps motorcycle club who were killed Saturday afternoon near Ocotillo have been identified by the club president, Carl Smith. Lance Heath, 43, and his wife, Amy, 36, of Alpine, died, as well as Bill Miller, 57, or Ramona and Tonya Trayer, 37, or Lakeside. Smith told the Union-Tribune that he tried to resuscitate Trayer for several minutes, but “there was nothing we could do.”

November 14, 2010 (Wynola) – A traffic collision involving three motorcycles has resulted in major injuries at the junction of Wynola Road and Farmer Road near Julian.

 

Mercy Air has been requested and a landing area established following the accident, which was reported at 3:31 p.m., CHP reports.

SPRING VALLEY WOMAN, SAN DIEGO MAN DIE IN ROLLOVER CRASH AT -805 RAMP TO HIGHWAY 94

November 14, 2010 (San Diego’s East County) – On November 11, a vehicle driven by Deshaun Glover went out of control, struck a guardrail and electrical box, then overturned on the northbound I-805 transition ramp to Interstate 94. Glover, 21, and a rear seat passenger, Candice McClean, 21, of Spring Valley were ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.

MAN KILLED RUNNING ACROSS FREEWAY IS IDENTIFIED

November 14, 2010 (El Cajon) – Anthony Watson, 22, of Spring Valley was struck and killed on November 10th when he attempted to run across the westbound lanes of Interstate 8 near State Route 67. He was hit by an SUV. Medics transported him to Sharp Memorial Hospital’s trauma unit, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Authorities seek driver who fled scene after crossing line, causing collision

Update Nov. 14:  Authorities now say that the driver who fled the scene was in a gold Honda Civic

 

November 13, 2010 (Ocotillo) – A horrific pileup today included seven motorcycles from Lakeside’s Saddle Tramps club and two other vehicles.  The crash left five dead, including at least four East County residents, and injured six others.

 

According to the CHP, a car crossed the center line on State Route 98 seven miles east of Ocotillo around 1 p.m., attempting to pass a group of motorcyclists. A  sedan veered to avoid a head-on collision with the car, then struck several motorcycles.

LION SEEN IN DOWTOWN ALPINE NEAR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

November 12, 2010 (Alpine) – People in an Alpine barber shop in were startled to see a mountain lion roaming along the 1700 block of Alpine Blvd. shortly after 9:30 a.m. The lion reportedly leaped from a pine tree and later ran into bushes next to a home near the Alpine Community Center and Alpine Elementary School, prompting the Sheriff’s department to summon Fish & Game officials. By the time wildlife officers arrived, however, the lion was gone.

ESCONDIDO BOY, 5, DROWNS IN CANOE ACCIDENT

November 12, 2010 (Escondido) – Keona Kazuo Ferreira, 5, drowned after a canoe in which he was riding with his father capsized and sank on November 6th at Mission Bay. Despite resuscitative efforts, he was pronounced brain dead at a local hospital two days later, on November 8th.

DRIVER, 19, SENTENCED IN FATAL HEAD-ON COLLISION NEAR STEELE CANYON



November 12, 2010 (El Cajon)—Baseball player Andrew Bellati, 19, pled guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter in a head-on collision January 22 that killed David Norman Reid, 50, and injured three others. Yesterday, a judge sentenced Bellati to five years of probation and eight months in custody, with credit for three months time that he has already served.

LAKESIDE FIREFIGHTERS DOUSE CAR FIRE

 

November 12, 2010 (Lakeside)--The Engine 3 crew from Lakeside's Lake Jennings fire station (fs3) responded to a vehicle fire in the 13000 block of Highway 8 Business Wednesday night. Engineer Chris Downing had little trouble finding the location of the fire as it was putting up a large, black smoke column visible from a distance. Luckily, the vehicle's driver had stopped in the middle of a parking lot with no other vehicles or structures in close proximity, Lakeside Fire reports.

The action comes after Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed $256 million from the “welfare-to-work” Stage 3 Child Care program.

OUT OF CONTROL VEHICLE ROLLS OVER ON I-8 IN LAKESIDE, BLOCKING LANES

November 6, 2010 (Alpine) – A vehicle reported as a runaway rolled over on the center divide on westbound I-8 freeway near Lake Jennings at 1 p.m., knocking the 60-year-old woman driving unconscious. Several children were also reportedly in the vehicle. According to CHP’s incident report page, the car may have suffered brake failure as the driver repeatedly applied the brakes but could not slow the vehicle down.

RABID FOX FOUND IN JAMUL

County urges public to have dogs and cats vaccinated; low-cost rabies shots offered at 3 County animal shelters

 

November 5, 2010 (Jamul) -- Rabies has been confirmed in a sick, adult grey fox which was found in a remote area of Jamul, officials announced today, adding that pet owners should ensure their animals’ rabies vaccinations are up-to-date.

 

There was no known human or domestic animal exposure to the sick fox. The last fox diagnosed with rabies was found in the Campo area in June 2000. In that case, three domestic dogs were exposed.

HAZ-MAT FIRE IN SANTEE CONTAINED

November 3, 2010 (Santee)-- Fire crews from Santee, Lakeside, and El Cajon were dispatched at 12 noon today to the vicinity of Hartley Rd and Stevens Rd in Santee. Upon arrival, active smoke and fire was seen at Advanced Electromagnetics Incorporated (AEMI) at 9311 Stevens Rd.  Fire crews initiated a “fast attack” and the fire was quickly extinguished, but the smoldering contents turned out to be highly toxic materials.
