December 21, 2024 (El Cajon) – The individual who was shot and killed by El Cajon Police officers on December 11 has been identified as 24-year-old Benjamin Grube.  Earlier reports had listed the suspect as a woman.

December 18, 2024 (El Cajon) – The tradition of skewered meats slow-grilled over a wood-burning fire arose in southern Brazil’s Pampas region, where gauchos, or Brazilian cowboys, would then take knives worn on belts and cut thin slices known as churrascos. Now you can savor this tradition at Rodizio Grill, an all-you-can-eat Brazilian steakhouse in downtown El Cajon. 

You can savor no less than 15 different cuts of meat served tableside by gaucho-clad waiters, including tender slices of steak, tri-tip, bacon-wrapped chicken, mint lamb  cooked with white wine and garlic, Portuguese sausage called Linguicia, ham, fish, and more. Update:  The letter sent by Mayor Wells to the Attorney General is now available here.The letter states that the City Council is considering a resolution declaring the city's intent to "comply with federal immigration laws and assist federal authorities in their enforcement efforts to the maximum extent possible."

December 11, 2024 (San Diego) – Yesterday, San Diego County Supervisors and El Cajon’s City Council held discussions that could determine fates of many immigrant residents—and set the stage for showdowns among federal, state and local authorities. San Diego County has an estimated 169,000 undocumented residents, according to the Migration Policy Institute, based on 2019 data.

The incoming Trump administration has announced plans to deport millions of immigrants nationwide—and demands that local authorities cooperate in mass deportation efforts. But a California law, Senate Bill 54, passed during the last Trump term, prohibits state and local jurisdictions from cooperating with federal authorities on deportation,with notable exceptions for serious crimes. Local authorities are carefully weighing the legal and moral implications of potential actions.

Update December 12, 2024 -- The suspect has died, San Diego Police have confirmed to ECM news partner 10 News.  Per protocol in officer-related shootings, SDPD is in charge of the investigation.

December 11, 2024 (El Cajon) – During preparations for a retirement celebration for an El Cajon Police captain outside ECPD headquarters this afternoon, multiple officers opened fire on a black Toyota pickup truck after it rammed an ECPD officer and tried to hit another officer, according to public information officer Keith MacArthur.

December 9, 2024 (El Cajon) -- As a citizen and former Special Education Local Planning Area (SELPA) Representative in the Cajon Valley Union School District, I am stunned by the recent comments made by Jim Miller, the current President of our School Board, on his public Facebook page.  Furthermore, as a parent of a now-adult son with autism who successfully matriculated from two schools in Cajon Valley, I am outraged at Miller’s comments. 

 His remarks, referring to a fellow Board Member as an "uneducated, on-the-spectrum, goose-stepping kook" and claiming that the schools this individual represents "don’t deserve" his representation, are a disgrace to the leadership of our district. 

 These words are not merely an attack on one individual; they are an attack on the principles of inclusion, respect, and dignity that we expect from our schools and their leaders. 

 Most egregiously, Miller’s use of “on-the-spectrum” as an insult demonstrates a profound ignorance and insensitivity toward autism and neurodiversity.

December 2, 2024 (San Diego’s East County) – Cal Fire investigators have arrested a serial arsonist accused of setting nine fires across East County between Nov. 10 and Nov. 30.

Allen Dinoyo, a transient resident of San Diego, will be charged with multiple felonies. He is accused of starting vegetation fires on Nov.10 in Jamul, followed by six fires on Nov. 20 in Rancho San Diego, Jamul, and Dehesa, as well as two more fires on Nov.30 in San Diego and La Mesa.

November 30, 2024 (El Cajon) – A man was taken into custody for smashing windows on an MTS bus on November 26 around 6:30 a.m. He was transported by American Medical Response to a hospital.

November 27, 2024 (El Cajon) – The German-American Societies of San Diego and Dia Rasselbande Preschool invite you to a traditional Christmas Market. This festive event features shopping for handmade gifts, delicious German dishes, holiday beer and Glühwein, choral performances,  kids’ activities, and photos with Santa.

November 21, 2024 (El Cajon) – A 70-year-old man using a walker was struck and  killed on November 19 shortly after 6 p.m.  According to police, the victim was jaywalking across Jamacha Blvd. near Pointe Parkway when he was struck by the SUV.  The pedestrian died at the scene.

November 20, 2024 (El Cajon) – Members of the El Cajon City Council voiced surprise at Tuesday's meeting to learn that a 1997 ordinance prohibited dogs in the downtown superblock area where popular events are held. So councilmembers voted unanimously to repeal the ban and legalize dog-walking downtown. 

Assistant City Manager Vince DiMaggio explained that the ban was originally approved due to a perception that dogs might pose health hazards and increase maintenance needs.  However, “none of those concerns have materialized,” he said, adding that bringing dogs to public places has since become commonplace, including companion animals as well as service dogs.

“We see dozens of dog walkers daily in Centennial Plaza,” he noted, adding that technically that’s illegal, as is walking dogs in Prescott Promenade and other downtown areas where the public frequently brings dogs on leashes when they dine at outdoor cafes, enjoy outdoor concerts and car shows, or simply exercise their pets along public streets..

October 17, 2024 (El Cajon) — In the seam of Benedict Ave’s 800 block at around 9:15 p.m. on Oct. 5, a chilly Saturday night two weekends ago, El Cajon police officers responded to a 911 call reporting the stabbing of a 71-year-old man, Steven Barron, who suffered a wound to his torso. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for treatment.

October 13, 2024 (San Diego) – Congresswoman Sara Jacobs, a Democrat, and El Cajon Mayor Bill Wells, a Republican, gave sharply divergent responses on a host of issues during a 51^st Congressional District candidate forum. The event, held at Temple Emanuel last week, was moderated by CBS 8 journalist Heather Myers with questions posed by the audience, plus in a twist, one question posed by each candidate to their opponent.

Wells sought to blame Democrats’ “radical left” policies  for problems ranging from inflation to rising homelessness and crime,  repeatedly criticizing immigrants while downplaying concerns over abortion. Jacobs sought to portray Wells as out of touch with women’s concerns over losing their reproductive freedoms if Republicans ban abortion at the national level and she denounced immigrant bashing as “dangerous” to Jews as well as immigrants.

Both voiced strong support for the Israeli people, but differed sharply in their views on how to defuse tensions and violence across the Mideast.  Wells chided Jacobs for focusing more on reproductive freedoms than economic issues, while Jacobs slammed Wells’ refusal to acknowledge that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election. She fired back that such “lies” led to the Capitol attack in which insurrections wearing “team Auschwitz” t-shirts burst into the House Chamber moments before Jacobs, a Jew, was evacuated.“
