January 27, 2011 (San Diego)--San Diego Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) checkpoint on Friday, January 28 at an undisclosed location within city limits between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. If officers suspect that a driver has been drinking or is impaired by drugs, they will conduct a field sobriety test.
January 27, 2011 (San Diego)— Earlier this month in San Bernardino County, three members of a family were electrocuted when they came in contact with a downed power line owned by Southern California Edison. According to news reports, the husband was the first one to approach the downed line, which had fallen into the family’s backyard. His wife and son also were killed when they tried to rescue him from the energized line.
“This tragedy serves as a reminder that you should never touch a downed power line and always should assume that any power line is ‘live’ and electricity is flowing through it,” said David L. Geier, vice president of electric operations for SDG&E.

January 27, 2011 (La Mesa) – A woman walking to her car in the Wal-Mart parking lot at Grossmont Center had her purse stolen last night around 6:30 p.m.The victim was approached from behind by the suspect, who grabbed the purse by the strap and attempted to flee. The victim tried unsuccessfully to hold onto her puse, twisting her lower back during the struggle.
January 27, 2011 (La Mesa)- On Tuesday, January 25 at 9:37 a.m., a lone suspect robbed the Pacific West Bank at 7966 La Mesa Boulevard. He handed a teller a demand note and fled on foot with the cash. No weapon was displayed and no one was harmed. Police called in the ASTREA helicopter to assist, but were unable to locate the suspect, who was last seen near La Mesa Blvd. and Guava Avenue.
January 26, 2011 (Casa De Oro)--San Miguel Fire Department responded to a motor home fire yesterday just after 2 p.m. in the 9800 block of Estrella Drive. Firefighters found the older model vehicle fully engulfed in flames that sent up a thick cloud of black smoke that could be seen for miles away. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion during the fire; early indications suggest a propane tank blew up.
Results of the study, conducted by the Army on 20,000 soldiers in Iraq, shows that 54 percent fewer soldiers contemplated suicide and the number of soldiers who needed to be sent home with mental health problems dropped by nearly 70 percent with more aggressive counseling in the field.

January 26, 2011 (El Cajon) – San Diego Sheriff’s deputies discovered a 93-year-old Pearl Harbor survivor living in “filth and squalor” in the 2000 block of Euclid Avenue in an unincorporated area of El Cajon. When deputies arrived yesterday, the veteran was holding a photograph of the ship on which he had served, the U.S.S. Vestal AR-4, which had been anchored next to the U.S.S. Arizona during the World War II attack.
Detectives arrested a live-in paid caretaker, Milagros Angeles, 62, for elder abuse.
January 26, 2011 (La Presa) - Witnesses say the driver of a high performance sports car was traveling in excess of 100 miles per hour when he lost control, rolled several times and hit hitting a utility pole in the 900 block of Gillespie Drive, San Miguel Fire District's Leonard Villareal reports. The impact snapped the utility pole, dropping the power lines and knocked the vehicle back on its driver’s side door. The vehicle hit with such force the passenger was pinned inside.

January 26, 2011 (El Cajon)--The Grossmont College Theatre Arts Department will present “Inside the Actor’s Process: Improvisation,” a performance of student actors using improvisational skills, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 4 and 5, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 5.
Through presentations of scenes and monologues, the show will demonstrate how student actors can develop such improvisational skills as timing, team work and listening.
January 26, 2011 (Lakeside)--Recently the Cub Scout pack #3 from Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Catholic School donated 20 bird nesting boxes to the Lakeside River Park Conservancy. The boys had built the boxes at their meetings with the help of their dads. While they were building , the scouts also learned about conservancy and animal habitat.
January 26, 2011 (Rancho San Diego) - Only a few miles separate Granite Hills and Valhalla high schools from each other. The players and coaches from both teams know each other well. Both schools have girls basketball teams with winning records fighting for top position in Grossmont Hills league play.
It was not surprising that Friday night's rivalry game (1/21) between these two teams at Valhalla High School was a tightly contested, spirited matchup in the first half. In the second half however, the visting Eagles' defense intensified and limited the Norsemen to just 11 points in a 42-32 Granite Hills win.
January 25, 2011 (Rancho San Diego) - When most coaches talk about playing defense, they use terms like 'deny' and 'shut down'. When your opponent has a player as talented as Granite Hills' Garrett Larch-Miller, who averages 26 points per game, defensive vocabulary changes to 'containing' and 'slowing down'.
In Friday night's boys basketball game at Valhalla High School, the host Norsemen were able to slow Larch-Miller down enough to pull out a 54-44 win over the Eagles.
January 25, 2011 (San Diego) – Dale Fetherling, one of San Diego’s most prominent journalists and authors, died January 18 at Kaiser Foundation Hospital from complications following heart surgery.
Fetherling helped establish the Los Angeles Times’ San Diego County edition in 1978, serving as editor until the publication closed in 1992. He covered some of our region’s biggest stories including the 1978 PSA plane crash, the 1984 McDonald’s massacre, and the trial of Mayor Roger Hedgecock.

January 25, 2011 (San Diego’s East County)--We’d like to set the record straight about the proposed Tule Wind Power Project’s expected impacts to protected species, namely the golden eagle and California condor.
As the Tribal Chairman of the Ewiiaapaayp Band of Kumeyaay Indians on whose land a portion of the Tule Wind Power Project is being proposed, I represent the tribe when I say that we fully support the entire Tule Wind Power Project. Our Reservation’s Class 7 wind resource (the highest rating and one of the few available sites in the U.S.) is our Tribe’s only natural resource and currently our only potential for economic development on our remote lands. The project is proposed in a remote, rugged and sparsely populated area, and the wind turbines would be unseen by nearly everyone, including the Tribe’s residents who will only partially see a few turbines.

January 24, 2011 (San Diego) -- The County Board of Supervisors will decide tomorrow whether to merge five fire agencies into the San Diego County Fire Authority. A hearing is set for Tuesday, January 25, at 9:30 in the Board Chamber at the County Administration Center, 1600 Pacific Highway in downtown San Diego.
The County Fire Authority was created in 2008 when the County united a handful of rural fire agencies with a goal of creating a stronger, more efficient agency that will eventually serve over half of the geographic area in our region, including unincorporated areas throughout San Diego's East County, where the devastating wildfires in 2003 and 2007 began.
More than $4.7 million is going to local programs that help homeless individuals and families who deal with challenges such as mental illness, disabilities and domestic violence. In East County, projects funded include Crisis House and Kurdish Human Rights Watch.
The County of San Diego Department of Housing and Community Development applied for funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Supportive Housing Program on behalf of community organizations.
January 24, 2011 (Scripps Ranch) – Gusty winds toppled a 100-foot-high eucalyptus tree in Hoyt Park, crashing it down upon a home owned by Art and Terri Moreau on Canyon Lake Drive in Scripps Ranch. Although the massive tree crushed the home’s roof and damaged a kitchen and bedroom, fortunately no one was injured.
