July 12, 2012 (La Mesa)--Michael Reed, a member of a local band, “Steam Powered Giraffe,” reported that he was mugged in downtown La Mesa and “knocked unconscious.”  According to Reed, he was “hit on the back of the head” on La Mesa Blvd. on Saturday, July 7 between 11 p.m. and midnight.

July 10, 2012 (Poway)-- A fire that started along Metate Lane and Carriage Road in Poway was knocked off fairly fast by fire crews from multiple agencies.
 
According to John Canavan, Division Chief of the City of Poway Fire Department, the fire started at 11:45 a.m. yesterday. It was a grass fire near homes, that burned eastwards towards Community along the road, pushed by a ten to fifteen mile wind.

July 10, 2012 (La Mesa) -- Memorial services were held at Faith Chapel at 11:00 a.m. this morning for Donato "Don" Sanfilippo who was the founder of a popular pizza restaurant in La Mesa. BABYSITTER ARRESTED FOR MURDER IN RAMONA

 

July 9, 2012 (Ramona)—David Humberto Ortiz, 19, has been arrested for the murder and assault of 8-month-old Liliana Velasquez. 

According to Lt. Larry Nesbitt with the San Diego Sheriff’s Homicide Detail, Ortiz was babysitting the infant in the 2600 block of Southern Oak Road in Ramona when the fatal assault occurred on July 4 at 11:27 a.m.

FIRE IN LAKE MORENA AREA

Update 7:50 p.m. - A resident at the scene reports the fire is now under control and nearly extinguished.

Update 5:39 p.m. - Incident Page Network reports the fire is now 15 acres, spreading fast and moving toward structures.

July 9, 2012 (Lake Morena) – A three acre fire is burning off Bass Road in Lake Morena, Cal Fire Captain Mike Mohler has informed ECM.   “It sounds like crews can hold it,” said Mohler, who called while on the road.

Two additional air tankers and one additional helicopter have been ordered to assist in dousing the blaze, he said.  “There are structures in the area but as of now, they are not threatened.”

July 9, 2012 (La Mesa) – This morning at 1:46 a.m., La Mesa Police responded to a report of a robbery at the AM/PM at 4925 Spring Street in the city of La Mesa.

According to the police, the clerk told officers that he was working behind the registers when the suspect walked into the store and demanded cash. When the clerk told the suspect that he didn’t believe he had a gun, the suspect pulled a pair of scissors from his pocket and walked behind the cash register counter.

July 9, 2012 (La Mesa) -- San Miguel Firefighters responded to a vegetation fire at the base of Mt. Helix just before 1:30 yesterday afternoon. Light to moderate flash fuel spread to half an acre before it was contained. In total four Engine Companies responded, two of the Engines responded from La Mesa as part of an automatic mutual aid agreement.

July 9, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)--Duff Brenna, a long-time East County resident and graduate of San Diego State, where he also taught and garnered several faculty awards, has written a candid and somewhat disturbing memoir of growing up in a dysfunctional family. Murdering The Mom: A Memoir resonates with me, for there are some aspects of this brilliantly written and insightful book that are eerily reminiscent of my mother and how she had to raise 10 of us – basically by herself.

July 9, 2012 (1:25 p.m.) -- A fire that began at Metate Lane and Carriage Road in Poway shortly before 1 p.m. today has grown to seven acres, Greg George, Emergency Resource Officer at San Diego Fire Department told ECM.  "It is still in fairly light fuel but it is growing," he said.

CAL FIRE ISSUES NO BURN PROCLAMATION DUE TO HIGH FIRE DANGER

July 9, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)—Effective immediately, Cal Fire has issued a no-burn proclamation for all state responsibility lands in San Diego and Imperial Counties.  All open burning is banned and campfires are restricted to designated campfire facilities in established public campgrounds.
