August 4, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Grossmont College’s two newest renovated buildings have received LEED certification from the United States Green Building Council, indicating that the buildings were designed, built and are operating using green strategies that incorporate energy and water efficiency and sustainable building materials.
The El Cajon college’s Student Services and Administration Building was recognized with a gold Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification while the college’s student center, the Griffin Center, earned a silver LEED certification. This is the first time that a building on the Grossmont or Cuyamaca campuses has achieved LEED certification.

July 24, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Officials at Guinness World Records in London have confirmed that Grossmont College in El Cajon was successful in its bid to set a world record for the most signatures on a birthday card in one day. The record was set at the community college’s 50th anniversary open house held on April 14, when a total of 1,821 people signed a four-foot-tall card, including 174 well-wishers who submitted their greetings on Grossmont College’s Facebook page. The previous record was 1,468 signatures on a card in one day.

17-year veteran of labor and employee relations named vice chancellor
July 19, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Victoria Simmons, a consultant and community college administrator specializing in labor relations and human resources for 17 years, is the new vice chancellor of human resources for the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District.
Simmons, who was hired after a nationwide search, began working at the college district July 1. She has experience in labor and employee relations, recruitment, equal employment opportunity compliance, staff development and training, classification, compensation, workers’ compensation and other human resources issues.

Two-time Olympian race walker a mentor to next generation of athletes
July 6, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Cuyamaca College cross-country coach Tim Seaman, a two-time Olympian race walker, will be traveling to the Games in London, but this time it will be as a coach instead of as a competitor.
Athletes competing in the men’s 20,000-meter race walk at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Oregon last week included, from left, Tyler Sorensen; Cuyamaca College graduate Nick Christie; Cuyamaca College cross country coach Tim Seaman, and the winner of the 12-man race and the lone qualifier for the London Games, Trevor Barron. Seaman, who has competed twice in the Olympics, is the coach for these three young athletes.

Bellus Graduate and Artistic Director Take Top Honors at RAW Competition
June 30, 2012 (Poway) -- Bellus Academy alumnae Kristin Bacaycay and artistic director Diego Raviglione took home top honors at the nationally-broadcast Behind the Chair RAW Competition on June 3 in Orlando, Florida, beating out six other teams to take first prize. The competition, which served to single out talented beauty professionals under the age of 30, featured Bacaycay as a stylist and Raviglione as a mentor for the Proctor & Gamble-sponsored Team ICAN.

June 28, 2012 (La Mesa)--A contentious issue facing the City of La Mesa has been whether to allow the College Preparatory Middle School, located in the La Mesa Church of Christ, to expand its student body from 180 pupils to 259.
The key issue is noise concerns of neighbors near the school. The property, located at the southwest corner of Jackson Drive and Grossmont Boulevard is not new. But the use of it as a Charter school has raised controversy.

June 17, 2012 (Rancho San Diego) -- Every summer the Heritage of the Americas Museum, located on the campus of Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego, has week-long classes for students going into fifth through ninth grades. All of the classes are taught by retired school teachers. The cost for each five-day class is only $50.00. The classes at the Museum are very unique, fun, and educational. The first two sessions are called Survivor: Pioneer Skills in the Computer World. This class teaches students things that they won’t learn sitting in front of a computer. They’ll build a model shelter, make fire by friction, and rig and lift a weight using a rope and pulleys, and more. The list of activities goes on and on and the students always have a great time.

June 11, 2012 (San Diego)--San Diego Jewish Academy (SDJA) eighth grade student Jonah Kohn was recently notified that he is one of five finalists in his age group out of a total 15 finalists in the 2012 Google Science Fair, which received thousands of entries from over 100 countries worldwide.
His project, Good Vibrations: Improving the Music Experience for People with Hearing Loss Using Multi-Frequency Tactile Sound, has the potential to affect millions of people with hearing loss by enhancing their ability to enjoy music.

June 10, 2012 (El Cajon) -- Bill Garrett, president of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District Governing Board, and Mary Kay Rosinski, board vice president, have been re-elected without opposition for another four-year term. Because they had no challengers, the names of Garrett and Rosinski were not on the June 5 ballot for East County voters. The college district operates Grossmont College in El Cajon and Cuyamaca College in Rancho San Diego, serving almost 30,000 students.
