November 23, 2009 (Lakeside) – After an evenly played first half Friday night, the Vaqueros of El Capitan High School dominated the visiting Wildcats of Brawley High School in the second half en route to a 35-10 win.

This was the first round of the CIF San Diego Section Division III playoffs. El Capitan entered the game as an eighth seed, while Brawley was the ninth seed.

(RANCHO SAN DIEGO) November 6th - High school football coaches often remind their players that the game is 48 minutes long and to achieve success, you must play hard for all 48 of those minutes. Friday night's football game at Steele Canyon High School between the host Cougars and the visiting Norsemen of Valhalla High School was a great example of why this reminder is so true. 

Need for food in East County cities rises sharply
 

November 7, 2009 (San Diego) -- The San Diego Chargers and Metropolitan Transit Service are partnering to run a series of food drives starting Nov. 10 and ending with a game day food drive at the Chargers vs. Philadelphia game at Qualcomm Stadium Nov. 15. Starting Tuesday, Nov. 10 MTS will host “Stuff the Bus Food Drives” at select Vons supermarket parking lots, where the public will be invited to stuff an MTS bus full of food to feed hungry San Diegans over the holiday season.

From January to June, the amount of food distributed by San Diego Food Bank to the needy doubled and tripled across the county. The number of meals distributed by the Food Bank in San Diego alone increased from 1.6 million to 2.4 million. In Lemon Grove, food distributed skyrocketed by 144%. Spring Valley food distribution shot up 80%, while La Mesa and El Cajon rose 31% and 32%.

Mt. Miguel Wins Overtime Period, Gains Tiebreaker Advantage for League and Playoffs

(RANCHO SAN DIEGO) October 30 - Tonight's football game at Steele Canyon High School between the host Cougars and the visiting Matadors from Mt. Miguel High School turned out to be a very exciting matchup between two Grossmont South league rivals. Both teams played to a 21-21 tie, but Mt. Miguel gained an advantage in terms of playoff seeding and league standing by winning an overtime period.

October 26, 2009 ( El Cajon)--The annual wheelchair basketball game--where the sound of squeaking rubber isn’t from the soles of players’ shoes, but from custom-built chairs pivoting and spinning across the gym floor--is set for 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 at the Cuyamaca College gym. The five-on-five games feature a mix of Cuyamaca’s basketball team playing alongside members of the San Diego Xpress, a National Wheelchair Basketball Association team formed in the mid-‘80s. Most of the wheelchair athletes have suffered spinal cord injuries, but that hasn’t stopped them from playing competitively.

Teams for Cuyamaca’s game are mixed with players from both sides, as well as anyone who wants to join in, so that the wheelchair league athletes don’t completely dominate the scoreboard, said Mary Asher-Fitzpatrick, a learning disabilities specialist in Cuyamaca College’s Disabled Students Programs and Services office.

(RANCHO SAN DIEGO) October 16 - Friday night's game between Valhalla High School's Norsemen and the Mt. Miguel Matadors had nearly everything a fan could want: a closely contested match between two competitive, talented teams that would not be decided until almost the last minute. It was a game that truly lived up to all the hype it received beforehand.

 October 2, 2009 (El Cajon)-- After twenty minutes of game time had elapsed, it seemed that Friday night's game between Granite Hills and Central High would be closely contested, with a final score in the 20s. Fortunately for the Granite Hills Eagles, that trend did not continue.

After a slow start by both teams, Granite Hills took control of the momentum and the game to cruise to a 38-13 win over visiting Central High's Spartans of El Centro. Both teams played a scoreless first quarter, and were able to move the ball on some plays, but not consistently enough to be a scoring threat.

(RANCHO SAN DIEGO) September 25 - Steele Canyon's football team is not happy right now. After the Cougars' 38-13 loss to Eastlake Friday night, head coach Ron Boehmke gathered his players in a circle on the field, and told them in no uncertain terms that this performance was not acceptable. The players knew it, the fans knew it, and after Coach Boehmke's postgame speech, half the people in Blythe knew it too.

(RANCHO SAN DIEGO) - This Friday, we head to Rancho San Diego to cover the home opener between the Steele Canyon Cougars and the visiting Eastlake Titans.

Steele Canyon (1-1) comes off a 2008 season where they finished 7-6, but won three out of their last four games, going deep in the playoffs. Only a loss to Valhalla kept the Cougars from making a December visit to Qualcomm Stadium.
