May 26, 2025 (Lakeside) –The County opened its much-anticipated outdoor Archery Range at Kumeyaay Valley Park last week.
 
Located at 10964 Ashwood Street in Lakeside, the new facility fills a community need for public outdoor archery ranges in San Diego County to support both beginner and competitive-level archery training.
 
“We’re so excited to be bringing this new and much anticipated archery range to East County,” said San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson, who represents the district where the range is located. “It will continue to enhance our region by providing all residents with a new outdoor space to engage in this sport.”

PADRES BREAK 1889 RECORD WITH 21-0 ROMP OVER ROCKIES

May 12, 2025 (Denver) – Following a wild 21-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on May 10 at Coors Field, the San Diego Padres moved briefly back into first place in the National League West, breaking a baseball record that has stood for more than a century.

But the Friars closed their nine-game road trip with a 9-3 loss to Major League Baseball’s losingest team, the Rockies (7-33) on Sunday.

PICKLEBALL COURTS COMING TO WELLS PARK IN EL CAJON

May 1, 2025 (El Cajon) -- Calling all pickleball players! Five new pickle ball courts are coming to Wells Park this summer.

The pickleball complex will feature LED court lighting, seating for spectators, shade sails, a drinking fountain with water bottle filler, new landscaping and more.

A portion of the Wells Center will be renovated to create a welcome area and pro-shop for all your pickleball needs.

April 30, 2025 (El Cajon) -- On Friday, April 25, Cuyamaca College celebrated the men’s soccer team’s championship season with a ring celebration, banner reveal, and County of San Diego proclamation presented by Supervisor Monica Montgomery Steppe. Their victory marks a historic achievement, as it is the first title won by a soccer team from the San Diego-Imperial County Region, as well as the fourth in the region of Southern California.

The event for ages 21 and up includes one round of golf and lunch.

The invitation states, “Challenge yourself on Willow Glen, a par 72 course, with demanding, narrow fairways and strategically placed bunkers. Sweetwater River runs along the course and comes into play on many holes, providing dramatic scenery and difficult shots. The layout contains several dogleg holes, elevation changes and water crossings that create an incomparable day of golf for enthusiasts. Ted Robinson redesigned Willow Glen in 1980.”

April 13, 2025 (San Diego) – The San Diego Padres are all alone in first place in the National League West, above both the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, with a winning ratio of .813. That's the most winning record in Major League Baseball, across all divisions.

And as the team improved to 13-3 after a 6-0 win over Colorado on Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout Petco Park crowd of 42,706, the Padres continue to leave opponents scoreless.

The Padres are off to their best start in the team’s 57-year history in Major League Baseball. The team currently tops the National League west standings, ahead of the Giants (11-4) and Dodgers (11-5).

SAN DIEGO SEALS SET SIGHTS ON PLAYOFFS

SAN DIEGO -- The National Lacrosse League 2024-25 regular season is coming to a close and the San Diego Seals (8-8) are hitting the home stretch soon.
 
The Seals are concluding their regular season with a two-game home-and-home series against the Albany FireWolves (6-10).
 
The first game is set for Saturday, April 12 at Albany’s MVP Arena (capacity: 17,500) with faceoff set for 4 p.m. It also marks the end of an arduous four-game stretch of road games for the Seals, who’ve traveled to Calgary, Rochester, N.Y., and Halifax, Nova Scotia for their last three games.

PADRES WIN FIRST SEVEN GAMES TO SET TEAM RECORD

April 4, 2025 (San Diego)  --- With seven consecutive wins to start the 2025 season, the San Diego Padres got off to their franchise-best start since they launched in 1969 as an expansion Major League Baseball club.

Although the team lost to the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Friday, April 4, in the opener of a three-game series in Chicago, the Padres were riding high as one of the two hottest and only undefeated teams in MLB – both in the National League West Division.

The Padres were perfect through the first week of the season after sweeping the Atlanta Braves over four games followed by a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians at Petco Park. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers were ahead, with an 8-0 record going into a three-game series in Philadelphia against the Phillies.

PINCH-HITTER SMACKS HOMER TO HELP PADRES WIN SEASON OPENER

 March 28, 2025 (San Diego) -- Sunshine-filled Petco Park was sold out for Opening Day of the San Diego Padres 2025 season on Thursday afternoon, where fans were treated to a 7-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

If Game One of 2025 was any indication, the Padres look to be ready for a stellar season following one of their best ever in 2024.

In front of a Petco Park-record 45,568 fans, the Padres rallied in the seventh inning to overcome a 4-3 deficit, scoring four runs to take the lead over the Braves.

The rally was sparked by a game-tying home run by pinch hitter Gavin Sheets in his first at-bat as a Padre.

BILL WALTON TRIBUTE TO HONOR BASKETBALL GREAT AT HELIX HIGH ON JANUARY 3

December 23, 2024 (La Mesa) --Always saying he was honored to be from East County, "Billy from La Mesa" is how Bill Walton wanted people to know him and greet him.
 
So it's only fitting that his high school alma mater in La Mesa is honoring him with a special event in January.
 
At nearly seven feet tall, with an almost literally larger-than-life persona and an endearing, charismatic personality-- a basketball star at Helix High School, the University of California at Los Angeles and professionally -- a beloved, knowledgeable sports announcer and broadcaster, music aficionado, father, husband and friend, passed away in May of 2024.

November 30, 2024 (San Diego) --The fifth-seeded San Diego State volleyball team saw its run at the 2024 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship come to a disappointing conclusion Friday after dropping a hard-fought 3-1 decision to top-seeded Colorado State in  a semifinal showdown at Cox Pavilion.

With the loss, the Aztecs drop to 20-10 on the year and will await their postseason fate when NCAA Tournament bids are announced on Sunday, Dec. 1. Conversely, the Rams move to 19-10 overall and will play second-seeded San José State in the championship final on Saturday at 2 p.m.

SANTEE’S NEW TURF FIELDS READY FOR ACTION

October 16, 2024 (Santee) -- At least four Santee sports groups including the local Pop Warner club, the Ravens, and youth soccer teams will soon get to experience the newly installed synthetic turf fields at Town Center Community Park.

The two new fields that feature lines for both football and soccer and can accommodate lacrosse were recently installed after an unusually long delay from having to wait to be adequately dry after a wet spring.

Stephanie Price, a member of the Santee Park and Recreation Committee (SPARC), was happy to see the brand new turf at the Oct. 10 dedication ceremony that took some six months to install due to the drying out time.

September 25, 2024 (San Diego) – For the eighth time in the team’s history, the San Diego Padres are headed for post-season playoffs. Last night the Padres beat the Dodgers, the National League leaders, in a 4-2 victory. The Dodgers rallied in the bottom of the ninth, scoring one run and landing two men on base before the Padres pulled off a rare triple play to end the game.

The win gives the Padres at least a wild card slot in the playoffs, and they still have a shot at winning a National League West title. The Dodgers are two games over the Padres, with two games remaining against the Dodgers and three more games after that.

September 23, 2024 (San Diego) – The San Diego Padres  swept the Chicago White Sox over the weekend. Their 4-2 victory  Sunday keeps them vying for the wild card slot in the post-season playoffs, which the team could clinch as early as Tuesday.

The Padres will square off against the Dodgers Tuesday in a three-game series. The Dodgers are in first place, making the series critical.  If the Padres win at least one game, they will secure a wild card spot in the playoffs.  If they win all three games, they will move up to first place in the National League West with three more games to go--and a shot at snagging their first division championship in 18 years.

September 20, 2024 (San Diego) -- Padres and fans had an excellent week with two shutouts Sept. 13 & 14 and an eventual sweep of the San Francisco Giants followed by a series-clinching 9/18 shutout against the Houston Astros.
 
These games showcased the Padres’ strong pitching including Dylan Cease and Joe Muscrove, and powerful batting. Two single game home runs by Manny Machado in two of those three shutouts led to decisive victories against the Astros and a commendable Giants sweep. Padres’ performance keeps America's finest city competitive for National League wild card standings.

El Capitan High School football team, a Grossmont Union district school, marched down Maine Avenue with their football team and cheerleaders while Maine Avenue was lined with fans. The small-town spirit was alive and the marching band complimented the atmosphere.

August 10, 2024 (Paris) -- U.S. Olympic rugby player Ariana Ramsey became a sensation on social media this week after documenting a series of free healthcare visits in the Olympic Village in Paris and becoming an advocate for universal care in her home country.
 
Ramsey's initial TikTok video, published Saturday, went viral in France after she expressed disbelief about the free healthcare on offer, playing into the European idea that Americans—who live in the only high-income country in the world without universal care—don't know what they are missing.

July 31, 2024  (Paris) – Skateboard champion Jagger Eaton has become the first San Diego athlete to medal in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, winning a silver medal in the street competition.  He is the first to win two Olympic medals for the U.S. in skateboarding.

SANTANA ATHLETE HELPS U.S. WATER POLO TEAM TO VICTORY IN PARIS OLYMPICS

July 31, 2024 (Santee) – An East County athlete is making a big splash at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. Alex Bowen scored three goals in Team USA’s second match, helping lead the team to a 14-8 victory over Romania.  Team USA will compete against Greece next Thursday.

Bowen was a star athlete at Santana High School, where he served as captain of both the water polo and swim teams. He helped lead the teams to several titles and was named most valuable player for the Grossmont North/Valley League in three consecutive years, 2008 through 2010.

After graduating, Bowen played water polo for Stanford University, scoring over 200 goals in four years. He was named a First Team All-American each year at Stanford.He later turned professional, competing in many countries, most recently for Noisy-le-Sec in France.

TWO AZTECS SET FOR PARIS SUMMER OLYMPICS

July 29, 2024 (Paris) -- Two former San Diego State athletes are set to compete at the Paris Summer Olympics, which began Friday (Pacific Daylight Time) ~ editor's update: with the opening ceremony, a rendition similar to the Last Supper except styalized using Roman influences, of course a diverse and odd cast as it was cast from Greek mythical gods and cannons. 
 
Former Aztec track and field star Shanieka Ricketts (Thomas) (2011-14) will represent Jamaica in the triple jump, while Xander Schauffele (2013-15) will play for the United States in men’s golf. 
 
Ricketts, the flag bearer for Jamaica at the opening ceremony, is set to begin the qualifying flights for the triple jump on Aug. 2 at 9:15 a.m. PDT at the Stade de France with the finals slated for Aug. 3 at 11:20 a.m. PDT.

CEASE GIVES PADRES SECOND NO-HITTER IN TEAM HISTORY, BLANKING NATIONALS 3-0

July 26, 2024 (Washington, D.C.) -- The Padres, going for a sweep Thursday in Washington, got something more out of the deal – a no-hitter.
 
Dylan Cease went the distance for his first career no-no in a 3-0 win by the Friars, managing somehow to top his two most recent starts in which he gave up only one hit.
 
The Padres waited a long time for the first no-hitter in team history – Joe Musgrove achieved the feat in 2021 – but didn’t have to wait so long for the second.
