Helix High cheer team reaches summit -- and looking for support

Jan. 7, 2026 (La Mesa)  — After three consecutive years of finishing as runners-up, the Helix Charter High School competitive cheer team finally reached the top of the podium, capturing first place in the Division 2 Large group at the San Diego Section CIF Traditional Competitive Cheerleading Championships competition in Carlsbad.
 
The event was held Dec. 13 at Carlsbad High School.
 
East County we well represented on the winners' podium. Other East County winners include Granite Hills (Division 1 Large), Steele Canyon (Division 1 Large coed), Grossmont (Division 3 Large), Santana (Division 3 Medium), Valhalla (Division 3 Small) and West Hills (Division 3 Large Coed).
 
For Helix head coach Heather Meyers and her 24-member squad, the victory represented the culmination of five years of steady progress and unwavering determination.
 
"It's hard to even find words for this feeling," Meyers said about the team's success. "For years, Helix Cheer climbed the same hill, coming so close but never quite reaching the top. Three years of second place could've broken us. Instead, it shaped us. It taught us patience, resilience, and how to keep believing when the outcome wasn't guaranteed."

Arizona and SMU to vie in 46th annual Holiday Bowl in San Diego

December 17, 2025 (San Diego) – It's a first for the Holiday Bowl -- the annual big college bowl game will be played here in January.

The January 2026 game will pit the17th-ranked Arizona Wildcats (9-3, 6-3) from the Big 12 Conference against the SMU Mustangs (8-4, 6-2) from the Atlantic Coast Conference for the 46th annual Trust & Will Holiday Bowl game.

The game starts at 5 p.m., Friday, Jan. 2 at Snapdragon Stadium, with the game showing live on Fox Broadcasting Company.

Nov. 10, 2025 (San Diego) – The new kids on the block are getting it done.
 
San Diego FC, in its debut MLS season, stamped its authority on the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs, beating the Portland Timbers 4-0 Sunday night at Snapdragon Stadium. The win clinched the Round One best-of-3 series, 2-1 and propels top-seeded San Diego into the Western Conference Semifinals against Minnesota.
 
The decisive Game 3 was a showcase for San Diego FC’s "star power," featuring SDFC forward Anders Dreyer and Amahl Pellegrino.

Nov. 3, 2025 (San Diego) -- San Diego FC and the Portland Timbers will be playing for the opportunity to advance in the Major League Soccer playoffs this Sunday after Portland beat SDFC 3-2 in a penalty shooutout Saturday night in Portland.
 
San Diego FC beat the Timbers 2-1 on Oct. 26, but couldn't put the second match away after regulation time.
 
The Nov. 1 match at Providence Park was a 2-2 draw during regulation, with San Diego FC forwards Amahl Pellegrino and Chucky Lozano each scoring goals. Kristoffer Velde and Gage Guerra scored for Portland in the match.

This year's event will be held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 5 at Grossmont Center near Chuze Fitness on the west side of the shopping mall.

Oct. 23, 2025 (San Diego) -- It's been quite a start for the San Diego Football Club.

In its inaugural Major League Soccer season, the team is headed to the playoffs.

San Diego FC will host its first playoff match Sunday, Oct. 26, at Snapdragon Stadium when the team faces the Portland Timbers in Game 1 of the Audi 2025 MLS Cup Playoffs Round One Best-of-Three series.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., with coverage available on MLS Season Pass via Apple TV.

Padres’ World Series dream ends in Chicago

Oct. 3, 2025 (Chicago) -- The San Diego Padres’ 2025 season, a 90-win campaign filled with promise and frustration, came to an abrupt halt on Thursday at Wrigley Field.

The Padres lost 3-1 to the host Chicago Cubs in the third game of the National League Wild Card Series, eliminating the Friars from the playoffs.

MLB.com quoted Padres All-Star Manny Machado after the game: “It just sucks. We want to be holding up the trophy … we fell short.”

Hot San Diego Padres poised for post-season run

Sept. 25, 2025 (San Diego) -- The San Diego Padres are playoff-bound, clinching a postseason berth earlier this week with a strong performance that bookends a regular season defined by a scorching start and solid finish.

The Padres hold a record of 87-72 heading into a final weekend series against the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Pads are currently second in the National League West -- behind the Los Angeles Dodgers (90-69) -- and have confirmed their status as a serious NL contender, ready for a postseason run, with the Friar Faithful ready and the quest for a World Series title officially on the table.

The Padres' playoff berth was secured Monday, Sept. 22, via a dramatic 11th-inning walk-off win over the Milwaukee Brewers, 5-4, with Freddy Fermin delivering the game-winning single. At that point the Padres improved to 86-71 to clinch the postseason spot. 

The 2025 season has been bookended by flashes of dominance.

Padres cruise to 11-1 win, move into first place in NL West

Aug. 13, 2025 (San Diego) – Don’t look now but the San Diego Padres are back in first place in the National League West.

After a mid-season slump, the Padres (69-52) have rediscovered their winning form and are making a strong push for the postseason.

The Friars have gone 17-8 since the All-Star break, have won eight of their last 10 games, are on a five-game winning streak, and are now a full game ahead of the arch rival Los Angeles Dodgers (68-53) for the NL West lead.

The Padres are currently on the road, just finishing a three-game series sweep against league foe San Francisco with an 11-1 win on Wednesday. The team will head down to Los Angeles for a crucial three-game weekend series against the Dodgers starting Friday, Aug. 15.

San Diego is only the second American city ever to host the international adaptive sporting event for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women.
 
The official announcement by The Invictus Games Foundation marks a major milestone for the region’s efforts to bring the Games back to the United States for only the second time since its inception in 2014.
 
San Diego’s bid was championed by the City of San Diego and the British American Business Council San Diego. It aims to showcase the city as a global leader in veteran wellness, recovery and mental fitness.

July 15, 2025 (San Diego) -- Seven student-athletes from the San Diego State University swim and dive program were named College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of AmericaScholar All-Americans for the 2024-25 campaign, as announced earlier this month by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America.
 
Valentina Lopez Arevalo earned first-team CSCAA Scholar All-America honors, while Wilma Johansson, Alex Roberts, Alina Skrocki, Meredith Smithbaker, Summer Westmoreland and Christiana Williams received second-team nods.
 
Eligible candidates for CSCAA Scholar All-America awards must maintain a 3.50 grade point average or higher, with first-team honorees competing at their national championship meet, while second-team selections must have recorded a “B” cut time standard for their national championship or qualified for a zone diving competition.

SYCUAN BENEFIT GOLF TOURNAMENT COMING JUNE 4

June 2, 2025 (El Cajon) The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is hosting its 34th annual Sycuan Cup Golf Tournament this Wednesday morning, June 4, at the Singing Hills Golf Club in El Cajon.
 
This year, the event aims to raise $100,000 for four deserving local nonprofit organizations: Elymash Yuuchaap – The Native Resource Center at San Diego State University, SBCS, HorsePlay Collective and War Party Ranch.
 
The invitational tournament kicks off at 8 a.m. with registration. A special beneficiary award ceremony will follow at 9:15 a.m., during which the Sycuan Tribal Council will present donation checks to each of the selected organizations.
 
Participants will then tee off at 10 a.m. on the Oak Glen and Willow Glen championship courses.

Located at 10964 Ashwood Street in Lakeside, the new facility fills a community need for public outdoor archery ranges in San Diego County to support both beginner and competitive-level archery training.
 
“We’re so excited to be bringing this new and much anticipated archery range to East County,” said San Diego County Supervisor Joel Anderson, who represents the district where the range is located. “It will continue to enhance our region by providing all residents with a new outdoor space to engage in this sport.”

PADRES BREAK 1889 RECORD WITH 21-0 ROMP OVER ROCKIES

May 12, 2025 (Denver) – Following a wild 21-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on May 10 at Coors Field, the San Diego Padres moved briefly back into first place in the National League West, breaking a baseball record that has stood for more than a century.

But the Friars closed their nine-game road trip with a 9-3 loss to Major League Baseball’s losingest team, the Rockies (7-33) on Sunday.

Their victory marks a historic achievement, as it is the first title won by a soccer team from the San Diego-Imperial County Region, as well as the fourth in the region of Southern California.

April 13, 2025 (San Diego) – The San Diego Padres are all alone in first place in the National League West, above both the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants, with a winning ratio of .813. That's the most winning record in Major League Baseball, across all divisions.

And as the team improved to 13-3 after a 6-0 win over Colorado on Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout Petco Park crowd of 42,706, the Padres continue to leave opponents scoreless.

The Padres are off to their best start in the team’s 57-year history in Major League Baseball. The team currently tops the National League west standings, ahead of the Giants (11-4) and Dodgers (11-5).

SAN DIEGO SEALS SET SIGHTS ON PLAYOFFS

SAN DIEGO -- The National Lacrosse League 2024-25 regular season is coming to a close and the San Diego Seals (8-8) are hitting the home stretch soon.
 
The Seals are concluding their regular season with a two-game home-and-home series against the Albany FireWolves (6-10).
 
The first game is set for Saturday, April 12 at Albany’s MVP Arena (capacity: 17,500) with faceoff set for 4 p.m. It also marks the end of an arduous four-game stretch of road games for the Seals, who’ve traveled to Calgary, Rochester, N.Y., and Halifax, Nova Scotia for their last three games.

PADRES WIN FIRST SEVEN GAMES TO SET TEAM RECORD

April 4, 2025 (San Diego)  --- With seven consecutive wins to start the 2025 season, the San Diego Padres got off to their franchise-best start since they launched in 1969 as an expansion Major League Baseball club.

Although the team lost to the Chicago Cubs 3-1 on Friday, April 4, in the opener of a three-game series in Chicago, the Padres were riding high as one of the two hottest and only undefeated teams in MLB – both in the National League West Division.

The Padres were perfect through the first week of the season after sweeping the Atlanta Braves over four games followed by a three-game sweep of the Cleveland Guardians at Petco Park. Only the Los Angeles Dodgers were ahead, with an 8-0 record going into a three-game series in Philadelphia against the Phillies.

PINCH-HITTER SMACKS HOMER TO HELP PADRES WIN SEASON OPENER

 March 28, 2025 (San Diego) -- Sunshine-filled Petco Park was sold out for Opening Day of the San Diego Padres 2025 season on Thursday afternoon, where fans were treated to a 7-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves.

If Game One of 2025 was any indication, the Padres look to be ready for a stellar season following one of their best ever in 2024.

In front of a Petco Park-record 45,568 fans, the Padres rallied in the seventh inning to overcome a 4-3 deficit, scoring four runs to take the lead over the Braves.

The rally was sparked by a game-tying home run by pinch hitter Gavin Sheets in his first at-bat as a Padre.

SDSU MEN'S BASKETBALL: AZTECS TAME LOBOS
