February 2, 2019 (San Diego) - The Aztec women’s basketball team (7-12, 2-6) withstood a rally from San José State (2-18, 1-8) to win 69-68 Saturday afternoon inside Viejas Arena.

SDSU led by 17 points in the first quarter, but saw the Spartans take their first lead of the game with 16 seconds left after Analyss Benally banked in a three-pointer. On the other end, Téa Adams knifed through the lane and scooped up the game-winner off the glass with two seconds left to secure the nail-biting victory for the Aztecs.

“THE BRIDGE” MUSICAL MARCH 24 IN SANTEE TO BENEFIT HOMELESS KIDS AND TEENS

February 2, 2019 (Santee) – Off Broadway Live in Santee will donate all proceeds from its March 24th, 3 p.m. showing of “The Bridge” to benefit homeless kids at teens at Father Joe’s Villages.

The musical focuses on six people whose lives were forever changed by what happened one night on a bridge.  The bridge knows their secrets, and at a reunion of their high school football championship season, everyone will be there—and the bridge is waiting.

EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF SAN DIEGO ELECTS FIRST FEMALE BISHOP

February 2, 2019 (Poway) -- The Episcopal Diocese of San Diego elected the Rev. Canon Susan Brown Snook as its fifth diocesan bishop today at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Poway. She was elected on the first ballot during an election that involved 212 voting delegates.  She is the first woman to be elected bishop since the diocese was formed in 1973. Others on the ballot were the Rev. Roy Hoffman, DMin and the Rev. Michael Tinnon, DMin, both priests serving in this diocese.

February 2, 2019 (Oceanside) – An Oceanside father of four who vanished on January 4th may have traveled to East County.  John Sturkie’s cell phone was traced to El Cajon on January 5 and 6 before it died. He is known to frequent Julian, the mud caves in Anza-Borrego desert, Palomar Mountain and Brawley/Calipatria.

LARGEST-EVER FENTANYL SEIZURE MADE AT PORT OF ENTRY BY AGENTS UNPAID DURING SHUTDOWN

February 1, 2019 (Tucson) – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Port of Nogales in Arizona seized nearly 650 pounds of fentanyl and methamphetamines worth close to $4.6 million last Saturday—the largest fentanyl seizure in CBP history nationwide.

LA MESA HEALTH CARE LIBRARY TO HOST FREE MEETING ON MEDICINES ON FEBRUARY 27TH

Herrick Community Health Care Library, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, will host “A Healthy Outlook on Aging, Medicines, Alcohol, Tobacco” from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 27.  The program is part of the library’s “Wellness Wednesday” series, normally held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. Admission is free. Light refreshments will be served. Advance RSVP is not necessary. Handouts will be available.

NEW STORMS TO BRING HEAVY RAIN, WINDS UP TO 80 MPH THIS WEEKEND

February 1, 2019 (San Diego's East County) -- A powerful storm is forecast to bring heavy rains and powerful winds countywide tonight through Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service. 

The storm could bring up to 4 inches of snow in mountain areas and a half inch in deserts, with 1.25 inches forecast in inland valleys and the coast. Strong winds with gusts up to 70 or 80 miles per hour in mountain and deset passes are also forecast, so secure loose items such as patio umbrellas. 

Flash flooding, urban flooding and debris flows are possible in some areas.

Another storm is expected to reach our region Sunday morning, with lighter rainfall Sunday and Monday.

THUNDERBOLT JOLTS EAST COUNTY RESIDENTS

January 31, 2019 (La Mesa) – A lightning bolt between Lemon Grove and La Mesa this afternoon produced a prolonged thunderclap loud enough to be heard as far away as Fletcher Hills, Lake Murray, Mission Gorge and Rancho San Diego.  The noise startled residents and terrified pets, but fortunately the bolt did not result in any reported damage.

At my Mt. Helix home, the whole house shook as rumbling continued for approximately 30 seconds after the initial roaring jolt.

BOIL WATER ORDER ISSUED FOR LAKE MORENA COUNTY PARK WATER SYSTEM

January 31, 2019 (Campo) -- The County of San Diego, Department of Environmental Health (DEH) has issued a Boil Water Order for the Lake Morena County Park water system located at 2550 Lake Morena Drive, Campo, effective immediately. The water system serves drinking water to recreational camping and RV sites, cabins, employee/volunteer housing, and public restrooms and showers.

COMMERCIAL BURGLARY SUSPECTS ARRESTED, ALSO CHARGED WITH DRUG CRIMES

January 31, 2019 (San Diego’s East County) — Two suspects believed responsible for over 30 commercial burglaries countywide with losses totaling over $130,000 have been arrested in Lakeside and Spring Valley.
 
Detectives and crime suppression team deputies from Alpine, Rancho San Diego, Lakeside and Santee participated in serving search warrants that led to recovery of property stolen from a business in Rancho San Diego. The search also found a clandestine marijuana growing operation and a butane honey oil extraction laboratory. Detectives from the San Diego Regional Narcotics Task Force responded, along with HAZMAT personnel and other law enforcement personnel.

CAMPO SCHOOL BUS ASSAILANT SENTENCED TO DRUG REHAB AND COUNSELING

January 30, 2018 (Campo) – A knife-wielding man who punched a Campo Elementary School bus driver in the face on May 25, 2018 has been sentenced to a year in jail, with part of his sentence slated to be served in a drug rehabilitation facility.

January 30, 2019 (Santee) – San Diego Police Officer Timothy Allan Romberger was arrested Wednesday in Santee. He is charged with felony domestic violence and assaulting his girlfriend by putting a semi-automatic gun to her head and asked her why he should let her live.
