It was an old-fashioned pitcher’s duel: San Diego State’s Rebecca Arbino versus BYU’s Hannah Howell, squaring off at the SDSU softball stadium on March 1. Not until the bottom of the seventh inning did the first run of the game cross the plate. It proved the gam

BARDIN BROTHERS ARE BIG WINNERS OF TWO DAYS OF SOAP BOX DERBY RACING

 

March 7, 2012 (La Mesa) -- Declan and Aidan Bardin of La Mesa dominated the results of the two-day Drew Ford/Kiwanis Club of La Mesa Soap Box Derby Rally Races on March 3 and 4 in La Mesa. Between them the Bardin brothers won four first place trophies, two second place and two third place. The boys are students at Literacy First Charter School in El Cajon.

March 2, 2012 (San Diego)--When the final buzzer hit 00.0 at Viejas Arena on Feb. 29, it was time for the celebration. Fans rushed the court. Music began blaring through the loud speakers. Both teams shook hands before the San Diego State women’s basketball team rushed to midcourt to join the rejoicing mob that had formed.

VALHALLA MOURNS PASSING OF COACH FRANK YANCEY; MEMORIAL SLATED FOR MARCH 9

February 29, 2012 (Santee) – Frank Yancey was “an inspiration for all those who served under him,”  Clay Meyer  wrote in the Valhalla Saga.  The school’s varsity football coach passed away February 13 at his home in Santee of an undisclosed cause.

Yancey coached 18 season at West Hills High, five at El Cajon Valley High and his last five at Valhalla.  His East County roots included playing as an offensive lineman at Santana High School and Grossmont College, as well as later at San Francisco State.

Coach Steve Vickery inducted into National High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame

February 28, 2012(Lakeside)--It’s no secret that El Capitan High School is a powerhouse when it comes to baseball in San Diego. Coming off a 2011 season in which the squad was ranked California's No. 18 team by ESPN’s CalHiSports and reached the San Diego Section CIF Division III finals, the Vaqueros are back in the CalHiSports state rankings again, this time in the preseason.

Led by reigning California Coaches Association State Baseball Coach of the Year Steve Vickery and 6-foot-5 senior southpaw Troy Conyers, the Vaqueros enter the season ranked No. 4 in California.

JAMAAL FRANKLIN A ONE-MAN SHOW AS SDSU PULLS INTO 1ST PLACE TIE

 
February 28, 2012 (San Diego)--Apparently, San Diego State sophomore guard Jamaal Franklin forgot that Senior Night is supposed to be a celebration for the seniors in their last home game ever.
 
Franklin matched his career-high in points with 31 and set a new career-high with 16 rebounds as the No. 24 Aztecs defeated the Colorado State Rams February 22 to pull into a three-way tie for first place in the Mountain West Conference standings with No. 18 New Mexico and No. 21 UNLV.

TWO DAYS OF SOAP BOX DERBY RALLY RACES SET FOR MARCH 4 & 5

February 24,2012 (La Mesa) -- Youngsters from throughout Southern California and Arizona will compete for trophies and points during two days of Soap Box Derby Rally Races on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday March 5 in La Mesa. The Drew Ford/Kiwanis Club of La Mesa Derby Races provide valuable experience for the 7-17-year old race car drivers as two-by-two they roll down the sloping race course on Junior High Drive next to La Mesa Middle School, achieving speeds up to 24 mph.

February 23, 2012 (San Diego) -- On Feb. 17, the San Diego State University baseball team began its 2012 season at Tony Gwynn Stadium on the campus of SDSU against the University of Washington. With the start of the highly anticipated season came a special honor. SDSU made it known that no member of the baseball program will ever wear the No. 37 again.
 
That was the number of former Aztec great and current Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg. That number is now retired.

University of New Mexico Now In Sole Possession of First Place in Mountain West Conference

February 22, 2012 (San Diego)--This was as close to winner-take-all game as a regular season game gets, except this winner became leader of the Mountain West Conference and controlled their destiny of winning the regular season title.
 
The script was written. After losing to No. 14/16 UNLV, No. 13/15 SDSU (20-5, 6-3 MWC) was back at home on February 15 in the friendly confines of Viejas Arena. They were facing a team they had beaten earlier on the road. They had not lost back-to-back games since January 2010.

Ron Murphy passed away at age 48

February 20, 2012 (La Mesa) Former Grossmont High School head football coach Ron Murphy passed away on Tuesday after a battle with skin cancer. Murphy was 48 years old.
 
Grossmont High School dedicated its basketball game against Helix High School in honor of Murphy. Grossmont High School also held a celebration of Murphy’s life on Saturday morning at the football field on campus.

February 17, 2012 (San Diego’s East County)— On February 10, the count was three balls and two strikes. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the bases were loaded with two outs. With Grossmont College trailing Pasadena City College 8-6, freshman catcher Brian Lockey (Bonita Vista HS) dug into the batter’s box as he got ready for the pitch.

February 9, 2012 (Santee) – The Randy Jones “5K For Independence” walk and fun run will be held on February 18 at Santee Lakes.  The event benefits Home of the Guiding Hands, which assists developmentally disabled adults and which has been hard-hit by state budget cuts.

Participants are invited to stay at Santee Lakes for a day of family fun, picnic lunch, beer garden, and awards ceremony.

“10 AND UNDER TENNIS” IN LA MESA STARTS FEB. 6

 
January 17, 2012 (La Mesa)— The City of La Mesa is serving up “10 and Under Tennis”  for kids.  This is a new method using the QuickStart format to learn the game of tennis in a fun, fast, and effective way. Kids will use shorter lighter rackets, slower and lower-bouncing balls, smaller court dimensions and modified scoring systems tailored to the age and size of the child.
