MEXICAN JUDGE ORDERS NO COMMERCIAL DISTRIBUTION OF GENETICALLY MODIFIED CORN

By Nadin Abbott

October 20, 2013 (San Diego) The 12th District Judge for Civil Matters in Mexico City has ordered no further commercial distribution of genetically modified (GMO) corn for the moment. The Judicial order temporarily prohibits “the suspension of permits, release and pilot field studies and commercialization of transgenic corn.”

The judge cited “risk of imminent harm to the environment” as the basis for his ruling, which bans multinational corporations such as Monsanto from releasing GMO corn into the Mexican countryside as long as lawsuits filed by citizens, farmers, scientists and other groups are working their way through the court system.

Health Impact News reports that Mexico has over 100 varieties of corn threatened by GMO crops from the U.S.  Since 2001, studies have found Mexico’s native corn has been contaminated by GMO strains such as Monsanto’s Round-up Ready corn, which contains an herbicide spliced into the seed, Food First has reported.

RAY LUTZ SETTLES SUIT WITH CITY OF SAN DIEGO OVER VOTING REGISTRATION ARREST

By Miriam Raftery

October 18, 2013– Former Congressional candidate Ray Lutz of El Cajon was arrested in November 2011 for attempting to register voters at the Civic Cente Plaza downtown.  This week, Lutz announced he has entered into a settlement with the City in which his arrest record will be expunged and the City will agree not to arrest people in the future for peaceful political activity in public spaces of private property.

"Our goal was to send a clear message and require that the city admit they were wrong. This is about as close to an admission of guilt you can get from the city. We want to make sure this never happens again,” said Lutz.

REPAVING CAUSES LONG-TERM TRAFFIC DELAYS IN JAMUL, HIGHLIGHTS HIGHWAY HAZARDS POSED BY PROPOSED CASINO

By Miriam Raftery

October 18, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – Residents in Jamul are voicing concerns over a repaving project along State Route 94 that is causing dangerous conditions and delays of up to a half hour. Multiple sources have advised ECM that no warning signs are posting to warn motorists that traffic has been reduced to one lane. The delays are projected to continue through January.

Kim Hamilton, editor of the Deerhorn Valley Antler, says the current situation may be just a precursor of traffic congestion that could occur if a proposed  casino at the Jamul Indian Casino is built. Already,  State Route 94 has a fatality rate per mile that is nearly six times the countywide average—before any casino is built.

The panel was a precursor to the Oct. 17 drill in which students, faculty and staff will be advised that in the event that they are inside a building during a real earthquake, they should drop to the floor, get under and hold onto a desk or a table, and cover their heads to prevent materials shaken loose from falling on them.  The Oct. 17 drill will last approximately two minutes after which normal classroom activities will resume.

NEW CALIFORNIA GUN LAWS SIGNED, OTHERS VETOED

By Miriam Raftery

October 11, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – If you leave a loaded gun where a child can access it, you’ll be committing a crime in California. If you store a loaded gun where someone prohibited from owning a gun has access and injures someone, you'll be guilty of criminal storage.  These are among nearly a dozen new gun laws signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown.

If you own a long gun, you’ll need to earn a safety certificate under a bill authored by Senator Marty Block (D-San Diego).

Pscyhotherapists will be required to report a serious threat of violence made by a patient against any specific victims to police within 24 hours. Police must notify the California Justice Department within a day after getting the report. The bill seeks to prevent a tragedy such as the Aurora, Colorado theater massacre; the shooter had threatened violence to his psychiatrist but doctor-patient confidentiality law prohibited the psychiatrist from notifying police.  A patient who threatens a psychotherapist will be banned from owning a gun for five years (currently the limit is six months).

FBI WARNS OF ATTACK ON U.S. ELECTRIC GRID; SDG&E REACTS

By Miriam Raftery

October 8, 2013 (San Diego’s East County) – The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) reveals that attacks on the  power grid have occurred, the Arkansas Times reported on October 7.  The FBI is offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to arrest of those responsible for these crimes.

The attacks included setting fire to a substation, rigging a cable in an attempt to cause a train to take down power lines, cutting down power poles, and downing a high voltage transmission line.  A warning painted on a control panel read, “You should have expected U.S.”

National security experts have long voiced concerns over a terrorist cyber-attack on the power grid. But the attacks  in August and September in Arkansas were of the low-tech variety, yet capable of major disruption.
