May 6, 2011 (Alpine) – Viejas Outlet Center will host Alpine’s biggest festival, the 14th annual Sage & Songbirds Festival & Garden Tour on Saturday, May 7 and Sunday, May 8.The theme for this year's festival, which includes live butterfly releases, is "Just Wing It."
A tour of residential gardens with butterfly and songbird-friendly habitats will also be held from May 6-8, with proceeds benefiting CHIRP, a non-profit organization dedicated to preservation and enjoyment of birds, butterflies and other creatures through hands-on and interactive programs and gardens.

May 5, 2011 (La Mesa) – Heidi Durfey, 24, has died after her sports utility vehicle (SUV) with her three young children inside rolled backward 60 feet and ran over her. The tragedy occurerd on the driveway of her home in the 8700 block of Glenira Avene in La Mesa around 9:20 a.m.
She became caught under the SUV as it rolled and was dragged beneath the vehicle. “It came to rest in the street with the front end of the vehicle on top of the victim’s head and chest,” said Sonny Saghera with Heartland Fire & Rescue.
May 5, 2011 (San Diego’s East County) – Governor Jerry Brown has announced plans to travel throughout California discussing the budget deficit with the people. Now Senator Joel Anderson (R-El Cajon) has sent a letter inviting the Governor to meet with people in El Cajon. He has collected letters of support for his invitation from prominent community leaders including elected officials, business leaders, and prominent educators.
If you would like your voice heard and want the Governor to come to East County, Senator Anderson suggests that you send your letter via fax (916-447-9008) or e-mail (senator.anderson@senate.ca.gov; his staff will then deliver it to the Governor.
May 5, 2011 (Washington D.C.) – Congressman Duncan Hunter (R-El Cajon) testified yesterday before the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands on H.R. 290, the War Memorial Protection Act. Hunter introduced the legislation—which allows for the inclusion of religious symbols on war memorials—in response to a recent ruling by the Ninth Circuit declaring the Mt. Soledad Veterans Memorial unconstitutional.
May 5, 2011 (San Diego) – A new pageant takes the stage on Monday, May 30, when the Joan B. Kroc Center will host the 2011 Miss San Diego Cities Pageant. Pageant organizers are currently seeking outgoing women ages 13-26 to participate in the program. Miss San Diego Cities 2011 will receive at $1,000.00 scholarship while Miss Teen San Diego Cities will receive a $500.00 scholarship.
The pageant is open to residents of unincorporated areas as well as residents of cities within San Diego County. It will be the first county wide pageant since the “Fairest of the Fair” ended in 2004 that does not have a swimsuit competition, does not have a talent competition and where the contestants do participate in essay writing and speech presentation.
May 5, 2011 (San Diego) – A hearing on a request filed by three East County organizations seeking an injunction to stop construction on Sunrise Powerlink until opponents’ case can be heard in court has been cancelled. The hearing was set to take place tomorrow, May 6 in San Diego federal court.
According to David Hogan, consultant for the plaintiffs seeking an injunction, “Things are moving very quickly and little information is available but it appears that Federal District Court Judge Anthony Battaglia has abruptly recused himself from several federal lawsuits filed by Powerlink opponents. The cases have been transferred to Judge Roger Benitez.”
May 5, 2011 (San Diego) – Sen. Christine Kehoe (D-San Diego) announced today that her legislation to better educate juries about the severity of unlawful strangulation between partners passed the Senate Public Safety Committee by a vote of 5-0 and now advances to the Senate Appropriations Committee.
“Almost half of domestic violence homicide victims experienced at least one episode of attempted strangulation before experiencing a lethal or near-lethal violent incident, and victims of attempted strangulation are seven times more likely to become homicide victims,” said Kehoe. “By providing clear legislation to guide judges and juries in addressing this lethal form of violence which occurs particularly often in domestic violence cases, homicides will be reduced, lives saved, and surviving victims will enter a more informed and responsive criminal justice system.”
May 5, 2011 (Alpine) -- Lions Tigers & Bears (LTB), San Diego's only big cat sanctuary, is once again hosting the "Wild in the Country" event on Saturday, May 21, 2011 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.to help raise awareness and funds for the plight against exotic and wild animals held in captivity.
The event will take place at the LTB facility at 24402 Martin Way, Alpine, CA 91901. Wild in the Country is LTB's signature event to raise funds that go to support the many big cats and other wild animals that have been adopted by LTB. The money raised through this annual eventgoes to pay for such services as veterinary needs, food, facility maintenance and future construction needs such as the bear enclosure.

San Diego River Park Foundation announces a series of events to raise funds for establishing trails, parks, gardens and visitor centers along the 52-mile-long San Diego River. The events include San Diego Days, San Diego RiverFest, and a Healthy River Run.
San Diego River Days May 7-8 and 14-15 offer community events along the 52-mile San Diego River from the mountains near Julian to Ocean Beach’s Dog Beach. Activities include bike rides, cleanups, mountain hikes, planting along the river, educational venues, along with nature and history walks. At the conclusion of River Days on May 15, the San Diego River Park Foundation and more than 50 organizations of the San Diego River Coalition join together with families from throughout the county for RiverFest.

May 5, 2011 (Lemon Grove) – A packed audience turned out Tuesday in Lemon Grove, where the cash-strapped city’s council voted 3-2 to eliminate the Recreation Department. Around 20 members of the community addressed the council, which also opted against outsourcing programs to the YMCA.
“All the community people who spoke were in favor of keeping the city’s youth programs,” said Councilman George Gastil, who voted against axing the department.
May 5, 2011 (La Mesa)--Approximately 300 students from the Grossmont Union High School District plunged into designing water-themed jewelry in the 3rd Annual Golden Artistry Jewelry Design Competition. The twenty-two finalists will be honored this Thursday evening, May 5th from 5-9 p.m., at La Mesa’s Community Center.
This FREE event is a fundraiser for the arts, with funds distributed by Friends of East County Arts, Inc. The evening will have FREE food from Tiramisu Trattoria and El Cajon Applebys. Wine and beer will be available for purchase. The evening also includes a live auction and opportunity drawing prizes. The event is open to all who want to support the arts.
May 5, 2011 (Harbison Canyon) – “A kitten that looks very much like the pic I have attached (our 8 week old kitten) was picked up by a hawk and dropped in the road on Harbison Canyon right down the street from Shadow Hills Elementary,” Kelly Vitek said in a post on the Blossom Valley Network community forum. According to her report, the incident was witnessed by three people, including Vitek’s husband.
“He said the kitten was freaked out but was alive and moving,” she added.

May 4, 2011 (El Cajon) - El Cajon Police officers responded to reports of gunshots at a residence on Lorna Street early Monday morning, just after 3:00 a.m. When they arrived, officers discovered a male victim who had suffered multiple injuries.

May 4, 2011 (Dulzura) – Gilbert N. Amador, 73, died May 2nd at Sharp Hospital of injuries sustained in a collision with a semi-truck April 28 at Dulzura. According to the San Diego Medical Examiner’s office, Amador was en route to an appointment and struck a semi-truck that was stopped in the roadway preparing to make a left turn.
