August 16, 2017 (San Diego) - San Diego State football senior Rashaad Penny (Norwalk, Calif.) has been named a 2017 CBS Sports Preseason Second-Team All-American as a kick returner, which was announced today on CBSSports.com. It is the third preseason All-America team that Penny has made as a kick returner as he was also a second-team honoree by Phil Steele Magazine and a third-team pick by Athlon Sports.

August 14, 2017 (San Diego) - Today's San Diego State football practice was canceled after an outbreak of chicken pox among some players, ECM news partner 10 News reports.

Three players began showing symptoms on Saturday, SDSU Senior Associate Athletic Director of Communications and Media Mike May told 10 News.

August 12, 2017 (Fullerton) - San Diego State endured a 49-minute delay before the start of the game and surrendered a goal in the first 68 seconds in a 1-0 exhibition loss at Cal State Fullerton. Outside of the lone goal, the Aztecs showed promise, outshooting the Titans 12-4 for the contest.

The honor comes on the heels of her win in the 100-meter hurdles at the Triton Invitational, during which she ran a collegiate best and the fifth-best time in SDSU history.

May 13, 2016 (San Diego)--This year's crop of San Diego State University graduates is more diverse, determined and decorated than any in its 119-year history.

Take Austin Owens. He'll receive his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering and the first-ever Zahn Spirit of Innovation Award at the College of Engineering's commencement ceremony on May 14 at 5:30 p.m. Owens, who is "passionate about solving problems and making things happen against all odds," has been a four-year SDSU standout for founding the on-campus Mechantronics Club, competing in international RoboSub competitions and landing a post-graduation job at SpaceX, a space exploration company founded by Elon Musk.

SAN DIEGO STATE AMONG THE MOST DANGEROUS CAMPUSES

May 30, 2013 (San Diego)-- Back in November the Daily Aztec reported San Diego State University  to be the seventh most dangerous college campus in the U.S. The Daily Aztec quoted the Business Insider, which stated, “SDSU experiences approximately 27 violent incidents per year.” In 2011 these included were five rapes, three robberies and five aggravated assaults.

ECM asked campus police some questions; Captain Lamine Secka responded in detail.

Our first question, actually coming from my years as a student, was what is the campus doing to improve lighting?

STUDENTS ROBBED AT GUNPOINT, SDSU POLICE WARN

 

April 6, 2013 (San Diego State University) – This morning at 2:03 a.m., two SDSU students were confronted by two robbers armed with handguns.  The victims were on Cuicacalli Walk near the Cuicacalli front desk.  The thieves stole wallets, a cell phone, ATM cards and a backpack. 

The suspects, both African-American men in their late 20s, were last seen running toward College Avenue.   The first suspect was about 6 feet 2 inches tall with an athletic build, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with red SDSU lettering on the front. The second suspect was about 6 feet 3 inches tall with a thin build and thick eyebrows; he was wearing a black beanie.

SDSU RECEIVES $1.67 MILLION JOBS ACCELERATOR GRANT

October 9, 2011 (San Diego) -- San Diego State University (SDSU) has received a joint grant of $1.67 million for its Jobs Accelerator program from the Economic Development Administration (EDA), the Small Business Administration and the Employment Training Administration (ETA). 

 

“Our number one priority is job creation,” said Congressman Bob Filner (D-San Diego), in announcing the award. “Our region has been in dire need of this type of investment in our economy and our students. In a time when school and local budgets are being cut to the bone, this grant will go a long way to creating the good paying jobs we need, training the workforce, and help us move into a new green energy economy.”
