April 5, 2022 (San Diego) - After some doubt about whether the band would be trapped in Ukraine by the Russian invasion, La Jolla Music Society (LJMS) is delighted to present the Ukrainian folk “ethno-chaos” group DakhaBrakha on April 22, 2022, at The Conrad in La Jolla.

Attendees will have the opportunity to donate to relief efforts in Ukraine or to directly support the band, whose members left families in Ukraine.

March 23, 2022 (Borrego Springs)  -- A desert town away from the city, with films by independent artists from around the globe. It sounds like the perfect setting for a film festival. That’s the backdrop for the Borrego Springs Film Festival, which normally takes place in January, but was pushed back due to the COVID pandemic to this week, starting Thursday, March 24 and continuing through Monday, March 28.

 

East County Magazine got a chance to sit down and talk with the chairman of the film festival, Fred Jee who discussed the early days of the festival and what’s yet to come.

March 22, 2022 (San Diego) - The Latino Film Festival showcased Un Mundo Extrano - Folk Tales and Speculations on March 20th, the festival’s closing day.  This showcase was curated by Miguel Rodriguez, the founder and executive producer of Horrible Imaginings, a 13-year-old horror-based festival slated for September 1-4 in Santa Ana, according to Filmfreeway.

LATINO FILM FESTIVAL TO AIR OVER 160 FILMS MARCH 10-20

Documentary co-produced by ECM journalist Mimi Pollack is among finalists.

March 10, 2022 (San Diego) --The 29th Annual San Diego Latino Festival begins March 10th and runs through March 20th at the Fashion Valley AMC. It will be the first time the festival will be in person since the start of the pandemic.

The festival features over 160 films from Central America and The United States, including local film makers from San Diego. Each day they’ll have art from prominent Latino artists on display, as well as daily live music. The full schedule of the events can be found here.

There are many remarkable films being shown in the 10 days of the festival, including films from film makers from in and around San Diego and East County.

In the 1940s, elderly Carrie Watts lived in Texas in a small apartment with a controlling daughter-in-law and her hen-pecked son. For 20 years, she kept trying to return to Bountiful, where she had spent the happiest years of her life. The only thing that keeps her going in her aged years is that she keeps trying to sneak out and go back home. She's always been caught, until now.

VALHALLA CHOIR WOWS PASSENGERS WITH IMPROMPTU CONCERT DURING FLIGHT DELAY

February 20, 2022 (El Cajon) – Valhalla High School in El Cajon, where students are known as Norsemen, sent the Valhalla Vocal Music Choir on a trip to Scandinavia and London. But when their British Airways flight out of San Diego was delayed, the choral members delighted passengers by singing an impromptu concert.

January 15, 2022 (Lemon Grove) -- The Lemon Grove Historical Society (LGHS) will observe Black History Month with a solo show, Mike Norris: A Retrospective, on view Feb. 1 through Apr. 30 on Saturdays, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and weekdays by appointment for groups of six or more from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Parsonage Museum, 3185 Olive Street, Treganza Heritage Park, Lemon Grove.

The exhibition honors the work of a noted African American photographer, whose work is characterized by drama, movement and deep humanity.

QUEEN NATION LIVE IN CONCERT JANUARY 29 AT THE MAGNOLIA IN EL CAJON
